  • What's your definition of succesful?

Just curious to know what everyone thinks. As the title says, What's your definition of succesful? Is it school? is it a good paying job? both? is it maybe to be self made? Give me some feedback I'm seriously curious to know what everyone's thoughts or feelings are.

For me, it will be to graduate with a masters degree in psychology and pursue my career. It is attaining your goals, upholding expectations of others. While doing all this maintain a level of happiness. However, being successful is different for each person, for some people it may be to sleep with 100 women every month ; ) I believe it all depends on your goals and the mindset at which you try to attain them. Most people associate it with wealth, but there are plenty of unhappy wealthy people who have done nothing with their lives. I would rather be poor and say I achieved my personal goals and made my grandparents proud than be filthy rich.

ok quick and simple reason I asked everyone is to see what everyone's perceptions are. Personally I have my own mindset and goals and I know I can make them happen. It's not the most orthodox and smoothest road but in the long run it will be more fruitful. It just seems 99% of people around me are so focused on the "normal" way of doing things, school and be succesful at a job, that they don't ever put any belief into what I'm doing. It's intresting to see how many people take into account other people when determining success, that's not a bad thing that's good that you all have foundations that strong. thanks all for your input.

I agree. Wealth does not equate to success - although too many people think that. Success is about attaining signifcant personal goals.

                    title says your definition
                    its personal, not general
mine is having 0 financial worries and the freedom to do whatever I want
that freedom is attained by having alot of money
so for me my significant goal is to be very well off
and im trying my hardest to do it :)

This is how I feel and really what my goal is as well. Money doesn't buy happpiness but I'm happiest when I can buy the things I want. It's just amazing that when your raised in a household or family that believes in one route or course and you deviate from it you don't get the same support or backing that you would if you had taken the conventional normal route. Just one more fork in life's twists and turns.

                        To me, Success is...

Following your own 'muse' or dream to happiness, while not squelching someone else's dream... and to be able share that happiness with as many (or few) people as you prefer.

Leaving things (be it a place or situation) in a better way than when you found it.

Having enough comfort so that you're not always thinking about the things you don't have (yet).

And lastly... Being able to look back on a day's work and realizing you enjoyed it, all the while pulling down a paycheck for having fun.

                        Thanks for the outlet,

Thats really hard to do for me, modding cars does this so much. Sometimes it drives me crazy and makes me feel like I havent accomplished anything. So i just think about the things I have done.

Well, technically the question was "What's your definition of succesful?". And I answered that.

Financial freedom is important to me as well; however, I am not sure "0 financial worries" is attainable. The more you make the more you spend. I make 4 times what I made 10 years ago, but yet, I still can't afford a turbo right now. The only people with "0 financial worries" are those with ridiculous amounts of cash. And contrary to what everyone will say here, money does not buy happiness. I know, everyone thinks it will, but trust me, it really does not.

My personal def of success: financial freedom - enough to give my family a comfortable life. Being a good, involved, informed parent. Acheiving my goals: my next goal is to finish my PhD. Then I'll set a new, harder goal.

                              Just being happy.

My parents make over 200k/yr. but I don't see them happy. They seem to create their own problems. I guess that's why Hollywood celebs. are never happy or satisfied. They just have a lot of pride.

With me I struggle to earn a living and to keep my material goods. But I'm happy with myself. I use to earn close to 80k/year. Now I'm down to 25k/year because I got laid off, lost my business and quit my stressful parttime job. SpeedingFirebird is right. The more I had, the more I was spending and I was never contempt. I find myself competing with the Jones.

I'm alive, healthy, I have an awesome wife, roof over my head, and my hobbies. I consider that as my success.
