It's been like that in Calif. Now they are trying to ban smoking in beaches.
I guess I can't blame them. The beach is just litered with cig.butts. I swear it's like an ashtray.
I just don't understand why smokers won't throw their butts in the receptickles.
Seriously... its so annoying. The number of cigarette butts i find in our cypress tree pots at work.... and there are ash trays and garbage cans less than 5 feet from them. Lazy sons of *****es....

quiet a few state have them and I love it. Oklahoma has one that is simular. and no, it doesnt ruin businesses like bars
why dont you tell that to the numerous businesses around here that have lost business/shut down since a few towns started making their own laws on it. im sure they'll agree with you that it doesnt ruin business.
those who say: "good, i cant stand going to a BAR and having to sit in smoke" you got to be kidding me. nobody forced you into that bar or to sit there and breathe in the smoke. thats your choice. dont like it? you can leave at anytime. there are plenty of places that dont allow smoking, go there then.
its bull**** that voters can make a decision for business owners on how they run their business. and it will ultimately ruin quite a few of the small businesses such as bars. and for me personally i work at a bar/grill sportsbar and this WILL affect MY money when business goes down not just the owners profits. people come to the place i work at because its one of the very few places that still allowed smoking.(i talk to the owner quite often and he said that when the local smoking ban went into effect we gained about 10k a month more than before the ban went into effect) with that money hours went up and more money for everyone. with this garbage excuse of a ban, business will go down, labor will go up, which means hours will be cut. which means i get ****ed by this.

The problem is, bars and restaurants aren't public locations. It's private property that someone is running a business on. And the property owner should have the choice to allow or ban smoking, depending on how they want to run their business. If I go to your house you should decide if I can smoke inside, not the gov't.
As much as I like the effects (being a nonsmoker), I don't think it's my right to dictate to private property owners how they should run their business. I vote with my dollars by avoiding the bars in town I know are smoke-filled and drink at the ones that have better air.
current car- 95 Trans am- bolt ons, parked and collecting dust. why? because **** it
Like I said... if these places wanted to allow smoking inside, then it should be a requirement that they upgrade their HVAC systems to filter the smoke more efficiently... There are current regs dictating teh amounts of certain air borne things, like particulates and the such... why not the stuff in cigarette smoke? hell, id be all for it.. regulate the amount of stuff allowed in the air, make it legal to smoke indoors, and fine the sh*t out of any place that allows smoking, but doesn't ventilate and filter the air enough to meet regulations... then we all win.. smokers can still smoke, the rest of us can still breathe, and business owner's can decide if they want their businesses (private property) to be a certain way...
that would work for the short term. but eventually someone will have a fit over it still and the whole process will start over.

When the standard across a large area is the same (ie: Ohio) you'll see that there will be no difference in buisness. Think about it. The only reason that those bars closed down was because it was a LOCAL ban, so people could and would just go to another bar in the next town where they could smoke. Now they don't have that option, so they'll just suck it up and smoke outside of whatever bar is the closest/favorite. Nobody has advantage, and people certainly won't stop going to bars just cuz they can't smoke inside

youre missing the point on the business aspect. where i work i am payed pretty well now. i got a fat raise after business went up due to the increase in business. now that same amount of business wont be there becuase the ban is statewide and people who smoke can go else where and it wont matter. loss in business of that kind means my hours will get cut becuase i wont be needed to be there as much anymore like i have before to help out from the amount of business we were doing. with what i make, its going to be alot harder to get the hours due to business not being where its been for the last year( cant remember the exact time but somewhere around there). when it comes to labor numbers the people who make more always get ****ed first in this kind of business.i would know since ive been in this kind of business for almost 10 years now. (dont ask why i just enjoy doing it for some reason other than the fact i make pretty good money) so it might not look bad from where youre sitting but its alot larger problem for me since it not only means i cant smoke anywhere but my wallet is going to suffer.
ok, this has been said, but im going to say it again.
no one is making you go into a bar. if there is a bar that smells like smoke, dont give them your business. but its just not fair that they make this ban. i would much rather be in a smokey bar than walking behind someone on the street who is smoking a cigarette. because of this, should we ban smoking in public? should we ban people who have colds from walking around in public? what about ugly people?
it all comes down to personal choice. if a bar owner thinks that it would be more profitable for them to not allow smoking, they should be able to. if, however, they want to let people smoke, its their choice. if business sucks for them, it was their choice! if for some reason their business prospers, it shows that these bans suck ***.

Yep. "It’s difficult to get a man to understand something when his salary depends upon his not understanding it."
I really doubt anyone is going to just stop going to the bar just because they can't smoke. It's not like they can just go to some place else and smoke. It's not like they have another option. Ok, stay home and smoke, but that doesn't fufill the need of going to the bar in the first place. People will continue to go to the bar.
Bottom line is: SMOKING IS A HEALTH HAZARD. It kills people directly and indirectly. If people are worried about their job not paying well because a few smokers will not show up to the party, then, sorry, but it looks like you need to get another job. I am all for the ban. I prayed for it to be passed here in NJ because I absolutely love to go out and watch bands but hated coming home reeking of smoke to the point that I had to shower and do laundry and almost felt ill from the inhalation of immense amounts of smoke into my body throughout the night. NJ joins California, NY, Ohio and many other states that are doing the same.
I somewhat understand where a few of you are coming from with the perspective of small business owners not having say in this. However, I have seen firsthand no difference in the number of patrons at bars in this area since the ban was passed. In fact, I'd say it has drawn more NON-SMOKERS out to the bars and restaurants than ever before. :)
Also, with the passing of the ban, I have heard people say that it gives them a "reason" to quit smoking.

Well then it seems your problem with the law is a personal one, in which case its just tough titties. They can't make a law to tailor to each personal needs. If that means that a few people will go back to what they were making a few years ago then too bad. Like shirl said, i think the pros are going to outway the cons in short time. You might be suprised, buisness at your particular joint might not go as far down as you'd think. Especially if its any sort of customer loyalty.

i hear that in Calif they have undercover cops go to bars and try to catch people smoking, don't know if it's true or not, if it is maybe thats the reason that they don't get all them drunk drivers
....cop...sorry mrs sanders your child was killed by a drunk driver, might not of happened if the voters would have voted on the bill to put more cops on the street but they did not and we have wayyy to many things going on to try to catch every drunk driver on the road
another cop... hey i busted 14 people trying to sneak a smoke down at rays bar!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
^^ The patrons don't get fined. The business does. That's how it's done here, anyway. I'm sure Ca. is similar because NJ usually follows in their footsteps. The business is responsible for enforcing the law in their establishment. So far, I have not seen ONE single person smoking inside a bar or restaurant since the law has been passed on April 15th. There was one bar (as I mentioned earlier) who let their patrons smoke regularly and were fined heavily for doing so.
