            (Stolen, paraphrased from Shirl)
Bottom line is: ALCOHOL IS A HEALTH HAZARD. It kills people directly and indirectly. I am all for the ban. I pray for Prohibition to return because I absolutely love to go out and watch bands but hate having to deal with obnoxious acting drunks at the bar, drunk drivers on the road at the end of the night, and the health-cost related taxes I have to bear from all the alcohol-caused deaths and diseases.

So, how far are you (not Shirl, general question) willing to go "for the public good"? Will you give up drinking and start hanging out with friends at the celery bar? Will you let a GPS-controlled speed limiter be installed in your car to prevent you from speeding on any road (remember to blow into the BAC tester before you can start the car)?

Why beat on smokers causing harm to the public just because it isn't one of your habits that harm others?

Alcohol does not effect others directly. Smoking does. You don't get drunk from being near someone who drinks. However, your lungs do get damaged from being near someone who smokes. Drinking only has a chance of effecting peolpe if the person that gets drunk is a belligerant type. Comparing smoking and drinking is nonsense. They are too completely different things with two completely different effects. Thats why i compared smoking to paint. Same method of ruining your body. Same effects on other people. Same reason for not wanting to be near it.

So far no one has come up with a good reason for wanting to keep smoking. The only thing you all have done is argue points against keeping it.

no arguments for wanting to keep smoking? because i ****ing want to! is that not enough? it is something that i enjoy doing. i enjoy smoking a cigarette while drinking a beer. i enjoy smoking a cigarette while reading a newspaper and drinking a coffee. this should be enough of a reason. im not going to try to justify why i should be allowed to keep smoking.
and yes, secondhand smoke is harmful. but realistically, you are more likely to die in a koala bear attack.

                      Re: **** ohio

I find it amusing that there are people that that think it is ok that their bad habits be projected onto others without any consideration whatsoever. I have a question for ONLY the "inconsiderate" smokers of this discussion:

What if someone farted in your face everytime you went out to eat or have a drink at a public restaurant/bar? Would that be ok with you? I mean, it would be someone's right to fart in your face, correct? You only have to inhale it everytime you take a bite of your food or a sip of your drink... Now imagine someone continually farting in your face the ENTIRE time that you are eating and/or drinking. Make you sick yet? exactly...

                          thats not rediculous

I enjoy farting from time to time

But wouldnt u be annoyed if i sat next to you and farted for 30 mins straight?

You would move to somewhere else in the bar/restaurant after like my 3 or 4 fart

It's only a rediculous because you are used to the smell. Just keep in mind that other people think of it in much the same way as shirl described.

And because you "****ing want to" isn't even a sort of ok reason to smoke. It ****ing harms other people. That makes it not alright to do it just because you want to. Your annoying/unhealthy habbit should not effect other people. That is where it crosses the line. That is what I have been saying this whole thread.

                                Re: **** ohio

You don't see it that way because you're addicted. Those of us who are not, have tolerated the smoke along with putting our health at risk. Blowing smoke (and my analogy of farting) are repulsive one in the same. The difference is that smoking causes cancer. It is not ok to project your hazardous habits onto others. I'm sorry there are a few of you who don't understand that. But knowing that most smokers don't care about their own health, I wouldn't expect them to understand how anyone else would feel. But the statistics stand for themselves on second hand smoke. And I'll be thanking god again tonight that I can breathe cleaner air when I go out to eat.
