Revolutions with guns worked when citizens had pretty much the same guns as the military. These days citizens wouldn't have a prayer against modern military weapons. Our main protection from tyranny is our laws. Which is why Executive power grabs like the Patriot Act and the Military Commissions Act and non-Judicailly approved wiretaps are troubling. And why having one party in total command with friendly judges, and who've said they won't obey the laws (signing statements) is not a good idea.
The successful revolutions in recent history in countries with a strong military (Spain, Chile, Soviet Republics...) didn't use guns.
V6Bob is right. A revolution like those of the past wouldn't work in this modern world. I don't know about you, but if an apache helicopter flew up told me to put down a weapon, go home, and shut up I would do it.
I think it's nice when the system is split between partys. That way they just spend all their time fighting each other. They can't screw anything up if they can't get anything done.
Heh. You actually believe Rumsfeld chose to resign???? Or that Bush meant it when he said he'd keep Rumsfeld no matter what? Listen carefully to Bush's press conference today, and you'll hear Bush admit that was a political statement and that Rumsfeld was told to go.
They couldn't fire him before the election, because it would have meant they were admitting Iraq is a screwed up mess. Their only possible position, however untenable, was that Iraq was OK. Now, Americans have spoken and they want him to be a distant memory before the next election.
Yeah, I heard the news. It was a meeting that they have. But notice Rumsfeld said "Criticism." And the Dem. will do just that. So I was right with my assumption. Also notice a lot of the higher ranks weren't please with that decision, but they understand because of the position he is in. Got this from a conservative news.
OK, now watch, the liberal media is not going to play that. They going to look for soldiers who's going to cheer on this.
As far as Iraq being a screwed up mess. That's what the Dem. and liberals want you to believe. The only thing that is screwing it up are the insurgents (Alqueeda, Sunni, Bathist part run). Which makes it difficult to get the ball rolling. But look at the success: Iraq now has a government, the people can now vote, children are now going to school (both boys and girls), Iraqis now have better relation with other Arab countries, Judicial court system is no longer corrupt, No more Saddam's secret police that murders Shiite and Kurds, Saddam has been convicted and the Kurds are now living in peace.
Everything takes time. This is not a fast food war or country to be developed. This will take about 10-15 years to settle. It takes time to build up their military and weaponry system. Once that's establish, our military can come home.
American wrote the Declaration of Independence and drafted the Constitution when our country was in turmoil. It took us almost a century to settle (economic stability and leadership) and to be recognized as a country by other nations.
There are like 32-38 million Iraqis. Not all of them are doing bad. The liberal media and the Dem. has fed you that BULL. To say that the President screwed up when in truth they should say that our military has screwed up. But they won't say that because that won't sound good to the public, instead just say we support the military and hate the President.
My relatives had their tour of duty a couple of times. When they get back here they are pissed off at the media and the Dem. because they are saying that they are a failure over there.
I would like to see what the Dem. can do. They would be a bigger screw up. They really have no plan. They said they could bring the troops home just like they said they could make Christopher Reeves walk again, but what's their layout? Nothing!!
I haven't seen them layout anything. As far as I'm concern, Saddam would still be in power-manupilating the UN with its Food for Oil policy, and continue hiding its weapons of mass destruction from the inspector who have been doped so many times if the Dem. was the Pres..
They would be like Pres. Clinton-do nothing policy. As long as you got a woman on your lap everything is fine and dandy.
Obama won't beat Hillary, she'll get the nomination in 2008. She'll be running against McCain.
The election wasn't a landslide but how many elections in which an incumbent is overthrown are? Defeating incumbents is VERY difficult, and the Democrats didn't lose a single seat they held previously, they gained over 30 seats in the House and (10?) in the Senate. Saying the election wasn't a landslide is not that relevant. That said, this is a defeat for the Republicans more than a victory for Democrats.
Mighty Thor: I didn't say everyone in the military criticizes the war, I just said Rumsfeld was incompetent. I think most of the military guys actually support Bush, although I don't know of any statistical datat to back that up.

I totally agree on your stance on the Iraq war. Let me add another point: It's better to fight them over there than it is over here. If we pull out, sure, things might be fine for a few weeks until something like 9/11 happens again. What if this time they get nukes or dirty bombs and bomb a major city or event?
lock down teh syria/iran/iraq border & see how long hostilities last.
Anyone notice how the north is relatively quiet w/the Kurds running that part of the show?
Also, didn't hitlery promise that by running for senate in 06 that she wouldn't run for pres in 08? shoulda made her sware on a bible for it........ but then that really didn't effect her other half .... :/

The Repub's could not stop spending and got into scandal after scandal. Add the war in and that's a recipe for loss.
It is interesting that the Repub losers in the close races seem to be taking losing gracefully, and not vowing to count and re-count and try to re-fiigure everything until they get things their way.
I don't hear any Repub hysterics about moving to Canada.
It is also interesting how the pre-election news was about how there was going ot be all sorts of voting irregularities. But as soon as the votes started coming out with Dems ahead, those stories were dropped.
Bottom line for me is that the Repub's had become a bunch of tax and spend scandal-ridden jackasses. Sounds an awful lot like Dems to me.
I solemnly swear I am up to no good.

Small problem. Our intelligence agencies say that we're creating more terrorists over there than we are killing. Iraq is not making us more safe, it's making us less safe.
"The only thing that is screwing it up are the insurgents (Alqueeda, Sunni, Bathist part run). "
Geez. Even the White House has dropped that line. The Shiite death squads that have tortured and killed Sunnis and split the country by making Sunnis move to Sunni areas are not a problem? It's a civil war. See what our military says:
