Rode the AutoTrain

What a great way to travel.

We loaded up the minivan, drove up to Sanford and then had a great time on the train up to DC. We had a family room on the way up and coach seats on the way back.

We liked having dinner on the train, sipping wine and enjoying the comfortable ride instead of driving all day and night or going through the hassle of flying / security / luggage check & claim / rental car. Our boys loved being on a train.

I enjoyed driving our own car around VA / DC. I really liked not having to pack up / lug everything single thing in suitcases. Plenty of room in the van for all of our stuff.

Maybe I'll try that with the Firebird someday.

How long did it take? Might have to think about that opition when planning for the Hot Rod Power Tour 2007.

Weird you mentioned that. I was just talking to my co-worker who got back on Wed. She and her son rode the Amtrak from Calif to DC, and then to Chicago.

I've never been on a train other than the one at Disneyland:p, and she was telling me what a great experience it was.

I checked the Amtrak site, and it was saying it's $213 for the car, and a coach seat is $140. The trip was listed as a 16 h 30 min trip.

That sounds right. They give about 10% off for AAA membership. We paid extra for the room on the way up.

My kids liked seeing that everyone got their own tickets - even the van got its own ticket.

You leave about 4:00 and get in at 8:30 or so. By the time they get the cars unloaded, it is about 9 or 9:30 - depends on when your car comes off the train.

Oh, and as for Sanford...

(thinks about the "if you haven't got something nice to say, don't say anything at all" rule)

...well, let's just say that when I lived in Orlando, Sanford was known for three things: 1. Being the crime capital of Seminole county, 2. Flea World, 3. being seedy and run-down.

Kinda nice to know some things have not changed in Central Florida.

Seminole county sucks. I HATE living here. It so run down. I expect to see the welcome mat outside the door to be missing everymorning. To my suprise its always there!

When we woudl tune in to the TV news in Orlando, it seems there was always some report of crime in Sanford (or if not there, then somebody was getting killed in Edgewater over in Volusia County).
