Re: Will the draft come back?
There will be no draft because if people that didn't volunteer started going to Iraq, the war would go from extremely unpopular to violently protested. A volunteer military will have to win this thing (if it is winnable, something to be debated.)-Eric
2002 Navy Blue Camaro...Striped and Stalled. 35th Anniversary SS wheels
Best ET: 15.384 @ 88.32 on street tires
Project Whitney: Goal, 14.0 1/4 by summer 2008.

Re: Will the draft come back?
I just read this on CNN yesterday and started laughing. The bill will not pass, hell the Air Force has been downsizing for the past 3 years.
If your going to be a services commander I wouldn't expect to have alot of gun-hoe troops. Most of them joined under a general contract and were stuck to rotate between, chow hall, gym, hotel...not exactly the meat and bones of military if you get my drift. Before anyone says something, yes people have to eat, but would you really have satisfaction to wake up and go wipe down sweaty gym equipment or ask someone if they needed a fluffier pillow? Plenty of people get promised things to get them there that aren't true. I've heard of Navy recruiters telling people they would never go to sea. Guess where they were 6 months later. And as someone said earlier this is a diffrent time than the forties. Our kids mouth us and women are in military as other things than nurses. The american people have a voice and use it. Do you think the american public would be ok if the goverment commondered tons of land and not tell anyone what it was for like when they started to build the nucleur bomb? Now days people would flip and the whole world would here about it before ground was even broke.Originally posted by kalaI'll have buttsecks with Richard Simmons!

Originally posted by rt1It depends on how much you want left of it when the military is done, and what you consider "winnable" to mean.

We already won the war by the way. Rather easily I would say. The leader has already been captured and soon to be executed. I guess that's not a victory.
It's securing it that's the hard part. Plus we are not running Iraq any more, it's the Iraqi government. What they say precede over us. Iraqi military has already taken much of the brunt against terrorist or insurgents and they are still in the developing phase. Once the Iraqi military gets to a million and is firmly secure. We can begin to leave.
I had a very interesting discussion with my co-worker who happens to be an historian. In the past we've won war by eliminating their WMD, blowing up their goverments, and killing their civilians. We did this to countries like Japan and German. Over 60 years have past, they are now our strongest ally.
Another thing we discussed about this was in order to filter out the violence we must create a mass exodus of the Iraqis to where the Americans can monitor them. The American can then fight off the terrorist cells that Saddam has supported for so many years. Once those are eliminated, the people can start their lives all over again. Just like Germany and Japan, they'll come out as a strong nation.Last edited by Mighty Thor; 11-21-2006, 05:43 PM.

Re: Will the draft come back?
Funny you bring up Germany... who has not a "draft" but mandatory military service.
Would you all think that would be better than a draft?

But, either way I would still serve my country so I don't really care which way it is. Some of these others may have a different opinion though.

A draft would never work today because there is too many people that are against every little thing everyone does, not saying that's a bad thing so don't start with me. All I'm getting at is that somewhere along the line of our fathers and grandfathers willing to join the service in WW2 and Korea to possibly give their lives and now where there is resentment I don't get it. The face of the enemy may have changed but the threat and danger has not. Does it really have to take another 9/11 style attack for the country to regain it's patriotism? Seems kinda ridiculous that thousands of innocent people have to die on this soil before the military gets tha backing it does deserve.Let's flip a coin. Heads I get tail, Tails I get head.

If this were true for us I wouldn't mine doing 2 year military service.
But like I said in the previous post, the draft is totally unnecessary when you have reserve and volunteer. This is not WW or Vietnam. Screw Sen. Kerry for saying Pres. Bush would bring it back when it truth he and some of his party wants to bring it back.
That's why he is not the Pres. because he flip flops and cowar when things gets rough.
