I was just curious what others have at their disposal when needing to work underneath their cars. What do you find easiest to use, a lift being the easiest I would imagine......
Do you use jack stands, ramps, jack up one side of the car with a hydraulic jack?
I'm just getting into serious mechanical work on my firebird and will be needing to work underneath it, so I'm wondering what everyone else uses.
Until I buy some better ramps or make something to help out....I have to jack up one side then slide the ramp under it.
*edit* ---I always jack up both sides regardless...but my frontend is too low to be able to drive onto the ramps...I have to get one side up in order to put the ramp under it.
Its UNSAFE to only jack up one side of the car
or to rely on JUST a jack
and if you dont engage the emergency brake
MANY people have been killed from being underneath a car
I've dropped my car quite a few times... I know how easy it is for a jack to just slip out
2k2 camaro, K&N, SLP whisper lid, Konis, AEM, HP Tuners, Angel eyes/Halos, CF SS ram air hood, 4.10s, Zexel Torsen, UMI SFCs, CrossFire, BFGs, Gatorback, Catco, Flows, and TLC! DONT feed the Trolls!
I use ramps. Usually just back it up onto them, then put it into gear and put on the e-brake. Then, if I need, I'll jack up the front end and put blocks under the front tires, along with jack stands at certain spots on the frame. Can't ever be too safe. I do have a lift that I could use, but it's my buddies, so by the time I get ahold of him, find a good time to come in and use it, and work everything out, I could have already had it up on the ramps and be ready to go. Lift is a hell of a lot easier.
Yeah, I have ramps, jacks, jack stands, no lift though :( Oh and I also have blocks for the back wheels. I was looking online at those lifts you roll up to the side of your car and slide it under and it can jack it into the air like 4 feet or something, those things could come in handy if they weren't so darn expensive.
I've never really liked jack stands because just looking at the structure of them makes me think that they could tip at any moment, but I still use them when need be.
I use Rhino ramps whenever I can. They have plenty of clearance, at least on an unlowered car.
If I have to use jack stands I set 4 in place very carefully. Then I try hard to knock the car off of them by pushing my weight against it. If I can't move it at all, I proceed.
I don't know if that's safer, it makes me feel better.
I have subframe connectors which have a spot I can jack an entire side of the car from one point put stands under that side then go to the other and do the same thing. It really does save some time only having to jack the car up 2 times vs 4. I use ramps for oil changes and anything where I don't have to remove the wheels. Speaking of that I just thought of a good birthday present idea to give my fiancee. She has been asking what I want an a nice new floor jack would be cool :D
