Re: Should I buy this car

I wouldn't buy from a dealer that can't tell me what engine is in the car..

They do have a good point, but a dealer isn't a mechanic in anyway. He sells cars, and usually doesn't care what the cars looks like, or even what kind they are. The dealer is just trying to make money, period(.) The body on that car looks good enough to go for $600 dollars, and if it had the stock engine in there, then the dealer could tell you what engine was in there. So, apparently the stock engine probably isn't in there, or it's so old and oily that he can't make out any codes on the engine and he isn't going to give someone a gurantee of what engine it has without him being 100% sure himself.

I would buy that car in a heartbeat and put all the little goodies on it you can find. Good luck, and have fun.

Re: Should I buy this car

Wow i want this car! I spent all last evening learning about restoration on all sorts of different sites. I want to buy this car, have grandpa drop a tranny in it (apparently the fourth generation 6 speeds fit in there nicely.) and then go from there.

The problem is Im about $400 short... I dont want to see this deal pass me up, but I have no currency and my parents are taking so long to figure out if they will lend me the money that i worry the car will be gone by the time they decide :'(

Well, if you are worried about that then I would suggest going back to the dealership and letting the salesperson know your dilema. Let them know how badly you want this car and that you are waiting on your parents to lend you the money, but they most probably will. Usually salespeople are looking for their commision and will help people out in certain situations, especially if they desperately want the car, but other factors are in play.

Who knows, if he/she is a nice person and knows how badly you want the car, they may park it in back and not show it to anyone else for a few weeks giving you sufficient amount of time to get the money. I know the dealers in my state and the state bordering me has did that for me and other friends and will still do it to this day. Good luck on getting your parents to give you the money.

Could that really work? Wow! Dude, I have never heard of anything like that, but I will definitely try it. I want this car sooo badly....

Btw, it says 1st and second gear are weak, but it would still be drivable just to get it home wouldn't it?

Re: Should I buy this car

Yeah, I would imagine. They said they were weak, not out. So I'm assuming that they work, it might just be a little hard to get them into gear, stay into gear, or just have slow speeds on the two gears. See if he will let you test drive it, so you can find out exactly what they mean by 1st and 2nd being weak, or just ask them.

I'm sure it doesn't. Even with the pictures that were shown, I'm sure if the passenger side was smashed we would be able to tell by the top of the frame. It may have some dents or something, but hopefully nothing to major.

Good luck with the car when you go and see them today.

Re: Should I buy this car

As long as you take care of an engine and are able to spot serious problems early and fix them then an engine can run about as long as you want it to. It may in the process loose so much hp it's not even funny, but it will still turnover and run down the street.

As for gas mileage I wouldn't be looking for more than getting 12-15 mpg. I could be wrong though and it could get a little more, just tinker with it and give it a good tune up and see what happens, you may just be surprised.

Re: Should I buy this car

I'm not real sure. And I could be wrong about the 15, but it just sounded like a reasonable guesstimate for a 3rd gen. I'm sure there are mods out there that work for getting better gas mileage, but nothing works as well as keeping the car tuned up, all your fluids flowing properly and keeping them clean, and tire pressure, and equal treads on all wheels. You would be surprised at how much of a difference the pressure in your tires can make on gas mileage.

If you don't believe it to be true, go to your front left tire and back right tire and deflate them to about 29 psi and have your other two tires at 32 psi and drive like that for a few days and just notice how much more your gas is eating. Also, doing this will also cause the treads to give way faster, and thus making your car ride uneven and eating up more gas as well.
