If that is what your friend wants and is planning then he is no friend at all. I'm sorry to say but, if a friend goes out with a girl that knocks her off my list of available girls. I couldn't see myself hurting my friend by bringing an old girlfriend of theirs around them all the time.
And as for the statement of "Once a girl has made up their mind, they are set on it"....that is far from the truth. Girls give indications when something is wrong and they still haven't made their mind up. They give these signs of trouble so that it gives the guy a chance to fix what he has done wrong so that the end result is a good one. The only problem usually is that guys don't realize what has happened until it is too late and never see the subtle signs that a girl puts in front of them. Luckily for this guy he was able to get a tip on it and see the signs once he knew what was going on, so it isn't too late for him.
