    Re: Stupid speed limiters

Fastest ive been was in a C4 with the removable top off...going 165 WAS LOUD! C4 still had more to give but that was enough for us.

I have my speed limiter set to 80. I can't really afford to pay for more than a 10 over speeding ticket.

I've done just over 150 in the wife's Z with the T-tops off a couple of times. But that was in Germany, so I didn't have to worry about speeding tickets. It was stock, except the free airbox mod and Flowmaster cat-back.

        Re: Stupid speed limiters

Technically you should be able to calculate it based on the redline RPM and your gear ratios / final drive ratio, and tire size, but I've never done the calculations. Different tranny's have different gear ratios and I don't think the V-6s all had the same trannys all years sold.

In any event if you've got the Y87 package as I do, it includes a higher ratio rear end, which will drop your top end speed at redline. Still, I've run up against the speed limiter at around 118-120 mph and still had a ways to go to redline. I'd very roughly estimate that my 2001 V-6 A4 with the Y87 package and the Goodyears it came with would hit redline at around 130-133 mph. But I wouldn't want to go there on those tires since they aren't rated for that speed.

So that's two strikes against the Y87s - you can only go about 130-135 mph max, and you go through tires like crazy 'cause they're always spinning.

Theoretically, 3.42s stop at 256. Its not the gears fault, its the engine. It doesn't have enough power

then you have to add in the fact that our cars WONT go anywhere near that fast with a stock exteror. drag limitation ftl.

254mph is for the V8 with 6speed T-56 manual...it will never see that speed though - unless you give it ~1000hp and equal amount of torque. The 3.23 rear end with T-5 transmission is geared to 197mph top end with stock tire rolling diameter. A 3.42 rear end with T-5 has a lower theoretical top speed, which is 186mph. But a V6 Camaro will never see those speeds unless engine power output is severely increased...

256 is not way off. I was doing it for the t-56 SIX speed. Thats why i asked when i first stated it "V6 or V8?"

                      I'm glad I don't have a v8...I would kill myself.

I have cruised with my limiter for at least ten miles one night next to an 80s corvette down the highway. super exciting

                              Re: Stupid speed limiters

you guys do realize, that the reason for these speed limiters is mainly do to the speed rating of tires. They are set at those limits because it is unsafe for the tires to be going that fast, they could just come apart.

hence why some z28s not equiped with Z-rated tires have the same speed limiter as v6s.

unless you all have Zrated tires I woudl be careful. Because most wrecks above 80, no one survives.

Do it once, then stop, I want you guys to get into lowspeed wrecks so their are more salvageable parts when you total your car.

                                Re: Stupid speed limiters

I have Z rated tires and the governor removed, but I still dont want to go 120+ mph. Way too much work into my car to wreck it now. And as DAS BOOT said, not too many have survived an 80+ mph crash that wasnt in a racecar.
