I understand the importance of school. I am very good at keeping up in school and I know its going to get harder but I know how to buckle down and get **** done.
I've never heard of a deferred loan for students to buy cars. Those types of loans, AFIAK, are for tuition. If you try to buy something w/o your parents, you will pay an a$$load in interest.
Your best bet would be to buy a cheap beater for like a grand and finish up school. Or have your parents help you buy a more reliable car. I would not take a high interest debt just to have a nice car.
Well student loans you dont have to start paying off until you graduate.
With my major I do not expect much trouble paying off an old car loan after college.
YOu want to be paying for a car in 4 years? That is a horrible idea.
You get a used 02 ls1, with 50k miles, for $15k
4 years from now, it will be 8 years old, and have 100k miles. And you will owe $15k on it.
Would you go you go out now and buy a 98 Ls1 with 100k on it for $15k? Thats where you will be in 4 years. The car will start being a major POS.
Plus on top of that, you will owe, all your regular student loans.
**** I know people who are living poorer out of college, then they did in college do to student loans and them thinking... (I will make $40k a year when I get out) And that doesn't include the extra $15k of a car added.
All that nonsense and debt, and you haven't even started saving for a downpayment on a house, your car is falling apart, you are putting in a few hundred a month to keep it running on top of the $15k you are paying . It will be worth nothing since the 5ht gen is out.
Or you can be like me and just get a decent car for cheap(like a newer v6 f-body) and run it into the ground. I had a car payment for a little while in school and it sucked horribly, but once it was paid off I was fine.

planning on: major mechan eng. minor buis/finance <-(havent taken any of these classes yet)
I understand a bike is probably not my best option, See last posts.
I'm getting a job next semester and right now I'm trying to figure out how I go about financing or getting a loan for a car to get me to and from that job. Which is what im asking for help for now.
Just to let you know, myself and I know dozens of others who were mechanical engineering majors once.
At least wait till your are taking classes in the major to where you are seeing what you are going to do(and I am not tlaking BS Gen ed classes), Assloads of people change their major, once they get itno and see it.

Yeah, mechanical engineering isn't an easy major. Once you get into classes like Thermodynamics, properties of heat transfer, etc....

student loans suck! still paying mine off 5 years later, and for my ol bike, bikes are fun but not practial, boring by yourself. If you do get a bike start with a cheep beater and take a bike course, I drove dirt bikes all my life and though I knew everything but the course really opened my eyes, any idiot can jump on a bike and do 100 mph down the road, but handling it is another question, Counter Stearing!
Insurance will crush your balls in vice.
Cash or don't buy one.
Finance through the manufacturer while they have a low apr deal. Turns out Yamaha and possibly other manufacturers do not require full coverage :). Basic Liability on a bike is chicken scratch. Full coverage is, as you put it, balls in the vice.
Cam is going for the car anyway. If he's smart with his money, he can compromise and take an older nice car, and an older nice bike and avoid the hefty payments. Then he will thank himself later when he graduates and buys a bad @ss bike and car because he has no left over payments, :). Right Cam?
P.S. - You wont find an AUTO "student loan". If anything you would have to lie and say its for school, then put the money towards a car, but you'll be kicking yourself in the @ss for that later on.
I'm actually begging the parents to help me out on a car. I'm waiting till summer starts. Hopefully a 98 ls1 for under 8k. I think I can afford that. I've been looking on ls1tech.com at there listings a whole lot and have found a few really good deals. If i get lucky i think i can get an ls1 with like 80k miles. I honnestly do not expect to put more then 10k on it in the three years I will have it. I understand my major is going to be hard and I still might go with computer engineering. We'll see what happens. I wasn't ever planning on spending over 10k by the way. Also, I dont expect to have anything to pay off when I graduate. (unless i finance a car). :)
