      You didn't have to fix it, because when I meant pinnalce of motorsports, I meant the pinnacle of ALL MOTORSPORTS, not just American. There is simply no race in the world that will ever bring the prestige, tradition, or spectacle as the Indy 500. Just the attendance alone merits the record of the largest single day sporting event in the world, NASCAR knows it, hell, Formula 1 knows it. Indy has had a 500 mile event longer than F1's Monaco Grand Prix, and the Daytona 500.

      NASCAR has peaked, it peaked 3 years ago, and now its on the way down. They are desperately trying to keep the open wheel fans they gained in '94-'98, but with the emergence of the IRL, and new possibilites of the open wheel split coming to an end, NASCAR is panicking. With panicky feeling comes rash desicions, jokes for rules, and cars such as the COT. And speaking of COT, I believe NASCAR OUTLAWED the use of wings on a car since the Superbee days in the 70's, now they are backing out of it, blaming it on safety concerns.

      NASCAR has become a joke, its just going to take some time for the average fan to know this. In the end, it will be sweet to see the Indy 500 like it was in the glory days of the '70's and 80's with a 400,000+ attendance.

        They made that rule because Petty was winning races by 10 laps. Not very exciting at all. Nothing wrong with reversing rules 30 years later. Every sport continously updates the rules.

        What NASCAR is trying to do is bring more competition to the races. The COT is less Aero sensitive which means driver talent *should* play into the racing more. As I mentioned before, the problem is not in the cars. The problem is in the tracks, they are boring but yet they keep building identical tracks. California Speedway cannot keep the fans in the stands. Mid race, they all go "shopping" and the stands look empty. At Bristol, I hate to leave my seat to go to the used beer dept, let alone go shopping. The racing is too damn good to leave. NASCAR needs more BMS, Martinsville, etc and less Texas, California, Kansas, Las Vegas .... tracks.

          but how are they gonna fit 150,000 people in seats around a short track!? thats crazy talk...

          lol.. just kidding by the way.. i agree whole hardedly.. short tracks are waht make for interesting events.. much more driver skill than just hp, aero package and perfect setup... in my book, places like darlington, bristol, dover, new hampshire, martinsville... pheonix.. those are fun races... I like a few of the large tracks too, cause they can produce exciting finishes.. charlotte, daytona, talledega.. all good tracks... pocono is good too cause its different and like nothing else out there... (or maybe im just a little home track biased on that one)

          nascar's roots are in exciting short track racing... and occasionally flying on some large superspeedway.. but mostly short tracks... and i feel they need to revert back to their roots if they wish to stay on top..

            How can something be concidered the "pinnicle" of all motorsports when 1. Nobody outside of ONE (maybe 3) country watches it (or even cares for that matter), and 2. More people go to watch a bunch of rednecks in plastic cookie cutters (Coke-Cola 600) than the fabled "pinnicle" of motorsport. Seems to me that for something to be the "pinnicle" it should at least get the majority of the ratings for the day... and at the very least: for its sport.

            Indianapolis isn't even the most watched motorsporting event in the COUNTRY, let alone the world.. Don't make me laugh.

              2. The Indianapolis 500 is televised in over 200 countries and 50+ languages WORLDWIDE annually.
              3. Last years Daytona 500 only saw a little over 150 million people worldwide watching it on TV, compared to the Indianapolis 500's 375 million worldwide. The only two events that have more people watching is the World Cup, and the Super Bowl.
              4. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is the world's largest sporting facility, with the estimated reserved seating to be well over 360,000.
              5. The Indianapolis 500 is the largest single day sporting event in the world, with the Brickyard 400 in second, also held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

              You were correct with only one thing, the Indy 500 is not the most watched sporting event in the country, football is. The Super Bowl has most people watching it, with the Daytona 500 in second, then the Indianapolis 500. And the only reason why the Daytona 500 gets better ratings (which ratings can only be gotten from American televisions) is because of the open wheel split, before that, the Daytona 500 wasn't getting half as much ratings as the Indy 500. So, stop talking, cause its blatant and obvious you have no clue what the hell you are talking about.

                  I used to be a huge nascar fan before fox took it over. Now nascar doesn't let anyone race anymore. Its too corporate. I don't like the wing on the new car, but if they could get rid of those restrictor plates, I vote for it. Nascar needs to shorten the length of the race. The middle is boring as the drivers are just waiting till the end to make a move. They need to shorten the races to 350-400 miles and shorten the season. 500 mile races for 35 weeks is too long. Let them race again and not fine someone 25 points because they accidently swore on tv. Finally get rid of toyota before they buy all their victories. They have a ton of $$ to spend and their plucking the best crew members from the existing teams because the other teams can't match toyota's offer. And if it goes global, change the name because it won't the National Association of Stock Car Auto Racing any more. Maybe WASCAR is better

                    Well the 2006 Daytona race was the Daytona 507.5... Daytona FTW.

                    I do think they should shorten the races. Especially on the shorter tracks. That way you don't have worry about cars that are 20-30 laps down. More cars would be closer to the lead lap.

                      I have heard from a friend at work that the best thing to do is mute the TV and turn the radio to MRN. That way you don't get the "Cousin Carl"s and the "June Bug"s.

                        I vote for this change. Has a nice ring to it and it makes it sound like a lisp all in one shot, you can't beat that. Hey let's go watch the WASCAR race.
