I don't know why, but we didn't have that problem. We'd start out with greeting them in French. If we had a question we'd ask it in French if we could. Otherwise we'd ask them in French if they spoke English. Mostly they'd switch immediately to English, even if we started in French. It was obvious we were American tourists struggling with French. Not once did anyone do anything that was rude or hostile. They were unfailingly polite, and helpful if they could be. Maybe they didn't smile much, but that didn't change what they did.

As I said, different experience. Maybe because we're old.

yeah, its not like im saying that couldnt happen. i have definitely had one or two good encounters with french people. all that i'm saying is that from what i have seen, along with what most other people have seen, french people tend to be quite conceited and self centered.

and cyborg, "dam" (amsterdam) is one of the most amazing cities ever. its so funny how you can go there for the first 17 years of your life, and everything is completely innocent. the second you turn 18, it changes completely.

My French colleagues say that as long as an attempt is made in French, it's cool. If you start in English, they get offended. Makes sense to me.
