hey guys, im am seriously 2 seconds away from throwing this computer out the window. My friend gave it to me cause he was fed up with it cause he couldn't get it to work. It has an amd 3200, MSI-7030 k8N mobo, 512mb ram, and 80gb SATA. Anyways, when I boot it up, everything powers up for 10 seconds and then it just shuts down. No video, no bios screen. Just powers up for exactly 10 seconds then shuts off. I reset the CMOS many times and I can't even update the BIOS cause I get no video. Can anybody help before go "office space" on it?
TIA
\"Well, we don\'t care how bad-*** some dude\'s N/A Honda S2000 motor is; if you go up against 900+ pushrod ponies and 750 pounds of earth-shaking torque with a wrong-wheel-drive econobox, you\'re gonna get a fast and furious old-school ***-whipping.\"
yes exactly what he said. mine did the same thing and that was the problem
was it the power supply? did you just replace it? or was it the CPU overheating? how did you fix that? I know the cpu fan is runnin'

Try taking out a stick a RAM. If it works, then the stick you took out is bad. If it doesn't work, swap the sticks and see if it works. Like everyone else said, it could be your Power Supply as well. Sounds like it's not big enough for the load, starts-up, then everything kicks on and it gets overloaded and quits. Try figuring out which one you have, and then get a bigger and better one. If it came with the case, it's most likely a POS.
It won't be overheating in 10 secs. Does it beep at all before shutting down?
Nope, just shuts down without warning.

Ok so I swapped out my power supply for one in one of my working computers and the same thing happened. However, I took off the CPU heatsink and there is barely any thermal compound/paste. Would that cause this?

Nope, wouldn't cause it. Installed any new hardware/software or 3rd party peripheral lately or before this started occuring? Did you mention what Windows OS you are running? Also, was the computer moved around a little or a lot right before it started doing this?
Unplug everything from the computer like a printer, scanner, speakers,............and have nothing but the keyboard and mouse connected. Don't even need the mouse, unless you don't know the hotkeys.
Open up the case, reseat the video card, reseat the memory also make sure that the connectors to the HDD(harddrive) are all connected(reseat them as well just for reassurance) Then, keeping the case open just in case you have to listen for beeps or fans running, start up the computer and start tapping F1 when your BIOS comes up(if it gets that far) just press F9 and then exit. Also, you can see if it will go into safe mode and if it will, see if it stays on that way.
To go into safe mode, start the computer up and start tapping F8 and a menu will come up, for Windows 98 and up it will be the 3rd option, so press the arrow key down twice and then hit enter on Safe Mode. Once there, if the computer is still running, click start, click run type in msconfig then choose the tab at the top that says startup(it will be all the way to the right of the box) then when you click that look all the way at the bottom and click the box that says "Disable All" and if you don't have that box, then go to each box and click it to take the check out of it. Click apply and then restart. See if the problem persists.
After all of this, if the problem still persists than it's your Power Supply connection and/or your MBD(motherboard)
Also, since you said it has no video, try switching your power cables. The one that plugs into the CPU, plug it into the monitor, and the one that goes into the monitor, plug it into the CPU.
Good luck and let me know how it goes, I can give further explanations and other troubleshooting methods to fix these problems if you need. Afterall, it's what I went to college for.
ok so i decided to unhook the SATA HD and it booted up fine. What does this mean?

Plug it back in and make sure it is securely plugged in, no loose ends and see what happens. If it doesn't stay booted up, then you are going to have to find your jumper.
It's a little plastic rectangular piece that is about a little less than 1/2 inch long. It will be on 2 prongs, with a third prong sticking out next to it. unplug the plastic piece and just move it over to where it's covering that third prong that was showing. Boot it up, then shut it down and put it back on the first two prongs where it was. Then reboot.
If this doesn't fix your problem then the HD is shot. :(

I securely plugged it in and still did the same thing, the HD did not come with a jumper.
