Install the cam yourself. :)

If you read the sticky on cams and heads it says,

"HONESTLY - If you can't do the cam install your self, I don't think it is worth it. Your car will need a lot more attention after the cam install, and it will cost thousands in shop time."


Some people might argue ^^^that statement though. But in my opinion, I believe it is a fact, not an opinion.

I'm going to do the cam myself when I get all the money together to do supporting mods. I'll just take a whole weekend and make sure I have plenty of beer. Beer makes everything look better so I can't possibly go wrong.

no the most would be the radiator and that's just an excuse to upgrade to a heavy duty aluminum if you do. It's just breaking down a lot of parts to get to the point of getting the cam out.

that's as good of a reason as any. Besides it's an excuse to buy upgrades. You need to take off the front of your engine so buy some new pulley's you need to get into the top of your heads so a whole new valavetrain. While your at upgrade the fuel system a little throw some bigger injectors on there for those upgrades later down the road. Buy an HP Tuners program to modify the computer. Did I miss anything? You get the idea, if you have to upgrade one thing find a reason to do everything else along the way.

depends on what you go with. doing it yourself will save a bunch but I would set aside at least 600-750 for the oops that is inevitable. Visit all the sites and price 'em. Just do a lot of research especially on this board to decide which one is best for you because there is a bunch out there. I understand the money thing I just bought a condo and every penny is going into that and my poor baby is getting neglected for now.

haha well me being a senior in high school makes it kind of hard also....i work two jobs but only 2 days outta the week....after gas and insurance i can set aside about a 100 a week towards it if i can control myself hha

You need to take everything off the top. This includes all vac lines, fuel rail, UIM, LIM, lifter guides, alternator, alt bracket, water pump pulley then wp, crank pulley, front cover, timing chain, and i'm sure a few other misc things i'm missing.

Can I ask why he needs to buy some new pulleys? Need to get into the top of the heads... Not sure what that means but I think you are trying to say he needs to upgrade his springs (105#), mod'd retainers, new vavle seals and locks. Please get a double roller timing chain, or ATLEAST buy a new OEM timing chain. Put #1 Piston at TDC so there will be no questions as far as aligning dots for timing. Radiator doesn't need to come out.

Injectors? Serious? Not needed right now. But i'm sure you don't need them. HP tuners is a good idea if you are willing to learn how to tune.

Gaskets: new injector o-rings, TB gaskets, UIM gasket, LIM gasket, front cover gasket. lube for the cam. valve cover gaskets when doing springs. be sure to include new rocker bolts as well. yea. sounds about it. prolly missed some stuff
