BAGHDAD, Iraq - Saddam Hussein, the shotgun-waving dictator who ruled Iraq with a remorseless brutality for a quarter-century and was driven from power by a U.S.-led war that left his country in shambles, was taken to the gallows and executed Saturday, Iraqi state-run television reported.

It was a grim end for the 69-year-old leader who had vexed three U.S. presidents. Despite his ouster, Washington, its allies and the new Iraqi leaders remain mired in a fight to quell a stubborn insurgency by Saddam loyalists and a vicious sectarian conflict.

Also hanged were Saddam's half-brother Barzan Ibrahim and Awad Hamed al-Bandar, the former chief justice of the Revolutionary Court. State-run Iraqiya television news announcer said "criminal Saddam was hanged to death and the execution started with criminal Saddam then Barzan then Awad al-Bandar."

Mariam al-Rayes, a legal expert and a former member of the Shiite bloc in parliament, told Iraqiya television that the execution "was filmed and God willing it will be shown. There was one camera present, and a doctor was also present there."

Haven't annoyed people in a while, so...

Or we could learn something from other Western democracies instead of from the shining example of government (not), the Middle East. And abolish the death penalty.

The four countries with the most executions are China, Saudi Arabia, Iran and the US. Some company we keep.

Yep. We're right up there with Iran in killing children.

And the other Western democracies don't seem to suffer from too much crime, either.

The death penalty is crap. Basically it's a hallmark of uncivilized countries.

LOL! Not annoying at all. You express a valid opinion that's widely held.

I happen to disagree with it vehemently, personally feeling that, while we must be very careful about those for whom we reserve this most serious and irreversible of punishments, there are a few who are clearly so great a danger to society that the best thing we can do is to humanely destroy them. But you raise a point and opinion that I must and do respect, even though I disagree with it.

The truly great thing about this nation (USA) is that everybody is allowed and even encouraged to express and promote their own views, and (ideally) the democratic process helps us sort it all out.

So, no annoyance from this corner, but perhaps a little surprise that the occasion of the execution of this most heinous of criminals should prompt you to speak out against execution in general. But if you're against executions on the whole, I suppose it must include these kinds of situations, so kudos to you for standing up for your beliefs.

^^ I agree. Let's instead use these people for human tests, such as how close to the sun cain a manned spaceship reallly get, no more crash test dummies, lets use the real thing, make-up testing, human landmine clearing companies, ....... the list goes on & on for the possibilities
