Just an FYI. The History Channel is showing the Modern Marvels episode about the Autobahn. I loved it the first time I saw it and just wanted to pass it on. It's on @ 1PM eastern and also @ 7PM.

while in the army my dad said he drove on parts of it... most of it was slower driving then what you think but he said that the part he remembered most was going about 100mph and having people pass him doing 140mph at the least. He did however say that everyone drives so polite and never gets in the wrong way. He felt safer there than on the interstate here.

Because they have pretty strict laws over there. You can only use the left lane for passing. Truckers can only drive in the right lane. One thing i found extremely awesome was that the grade (rise/run) of the autobahn could only be < 7%, so no big hills or dips

I think the turns are the same way. So you can still maintain your speed in the turns.

I loved the autobahn. I have fond memories of the wife's Z doing 150 with the t-tops off. Good times.

              Re: Autobahn

I've had the opportunity to talk to some German guys from Airbus Industries and they tell me that people go missing from the Autobahn all the time. They'll find them a few days later in their wrecks hundreds of feet off the side. No body sees them crash and wreckage stops so far away that no one sees them unless they are looking specifically.

Still, I would love to give that road a buzz!!!!

Yeah, I guess it could happen, but there is so much guard rail I don't think it would happen alot. Where there isn't guard rail they have thick bushes to slow the cars and as a sound dampener. They are big on noise polution over there.

the most impressive thing i thought was how thick the road was. There is alot of construction but with such high speeds, small nicks can be deadly.

Yeah and that they don't patch it. They pull up the section and replace it.

Funny this is mentioned because I watched it. I like how no-one is allowed to pass you on the right (passenger) side of your vehicle. They should enforce that law here!

I'd LOVE to take a Twin Turbo Porche or a Z06 out for a spin on it!

Well, that did used to be how it was many years ago. Still to this day, if a State Trooper wanted to be an arse about it, he could pull someone over for passing in the slow lane. But that is why if you ever see older people driving, they will stay in the fast lane and just get up close and flash their lights, letting them know that you want and need to pass.

I still like when I go to Texas and cars ride onto the shoulder so that a faster car can go around them. That's hospitality right there.

unfortunatly, like everything else good in life, even the Autobahn isn't what it used to be

Nowadays you flash your lights at somebody going too slow in the left lane, and half the people (or more) cop an atitude and slow down if they don't actually slam on their brakes to try and make you wreck.

Common courtesy is extremely rare in the U.S. anymore. Nowadays everybody has road rage.

when i drive my saturn in the left lane, no one moves over - sometimes they slow down.

when i drive my camaro in the left lane, everyone seems more encouraged to move over:excited:
