i want to upgrade my amd 64 3000+ to a 3700+. my motherboard is an asus
k8n-e deluxe which is a socket 754. upgrading to a 939 motherboard is really not an option because i spent 380.00 for my 6800gt video card which is an agp card. ok my question is, does anyone know if a mobile 3700+ socket 754 will work with this motherboard? i can get a mobile for a good price on ebay but a regular one is almost impossable to come by or they want 300.00. i have searched the net but came up with nothing, i know this is a shot in the dark but if anybody has any info i would owe you big time
    thanks

the mobile cpu probably will not work. You can use the amd 64 3700+ with your motherboard. if its rev. 1.04. http://www2.amd.com/us-en/recmobo/Re...~73649,00.html

Socket 939 is dead AGP should be dead too. I would have upgraded to the AM2 socket with PCI-E graphics card. I'm looking to upgrade this summer.
I'm still using the old socket A with and AMD 2100+ and a ti-4400 AGP card. WOOT!

Agreed. And I swear, the sentences that you two just said sounds like something that two of the guys I used to work with at Gateway had

I recently was told by my wife that "it's apparently cool to be able to tell her about the features and capabilities of new vehicles being made, but it's not alright to talk about the features and capabilities of the software/hardware that is being made." :(

The mobile chip SHOULD work. It has the same pins/whatnot. I helped a friend switch from his old CPU, to a mobile, and he loves it.

I believe the stock MHz was about 1600, and he brought it up over 3 GHz (overclocked)

Do a lil research and I think you will learn that it is possible

And if you are into OCing at all, it will prove to be a very deadly combination.

Socket 939 and AGP are dying soon man. I've overclocked my desktop's FX5200 from 350/400 to 550/600 without any artifacts on stock cooling. Have you looked into OCing your CPU as well? I'm thinking about it on my laptop. AMD's don't OC as well as Intel's do though. The mobile 3700 should work. Should, as in I'm not 100% sure. Why not look into a 3400 or something of the sort, add a fan and OC your way to 3700? I know many people do it. You could probably even OC your current upto 3200 or even 3400 speeds. If you do OC though, make sure you get enough cooling on the processor. Don't want to fry it......trust me :P I had an old AMD X64 (or something like that, it was made in 1997). Original speed was 577MHz, I OCed it upto 2.1GHz on stock cooling. Too bad it didn't want to stay that way too long and went boom

is it really true that you can put a socket A type cpu into like a slot 1 type input?? I dont think so

you know, thats what i'm gonna do. i checked the clock speeds and the 3400 and the 3700 both run at 2.4gz the only difference it seems to me is the 3700 has 1mb of l2 cashe, whatever the heck that means. i found a 3400+ new castle (the newer 3400 model that runs at 2.4) for about 100 bucks on ebay. i got this mb and processor a couple of years ago just before the 939 came out, i didn't want to wait:( but really the processor is not the upgrading problem, it's that darn video card i have. i just cant see spending another 400.00 on a video card (pci express) when the one i have just eats up everything i have ever thrown at it. anyway wow, i did not expect a lot of replies...thanks to all for the info:)

It is mostly a matter of opinion, but you will see more people OCing AMD's to further extents then you will people with Intels, just because of the tools available for AMD's.

I have a few good articles kicking around here somewhere, Ill see if I cant dig them up somehow.

yes my motherboard has a utility that will oc 10% so i was running my 3000+ at 2.2gz my new one should get 2.6gz with the 10% kick. i know you can go higher but i was messing around one time with the memory clocks and f 'd things up pretty good so i decided to quit trying to oc

                          Re: need cpu help

you got ripped on your graphics card, i would not pay 100 for it. with the move to vista and dx10 even the 7 series cards are going to be out of date within a few months. AGP is already worthless. I'm just pissed my 7900 will probably not support d3d10 when it comes out. ARGH!

without checking i would think the mobile would work, really am not sure on that. They are underclocked though and you can really get those things going. The voltage on that processor will be lower and you will never get as good of performance as a non mobile. For now, just get a better fan and overclock your current processor to 2.6 ghz. It shouldnt have a problem taking that. You will notice BARELY any difference between 2.2ghz and 2.6ghz anyway.

I vote that you go the cheapest route now, dont upgrade yet. Maybe in 6months to a year that is if it even matters to you. Everything is moving toward multi core processors. Wait for stuff to become affordable. I think the prices of hardware is about to go way down with the release of vista and recent new technology like the cell processor. Vista is demanding. My lappy sucks with vista right now(not beta vista), im sticking to XP. It just seems slower and takes up a nearly a gig of ram. Oh, and my lappy has a t2500 and 2 gigs of ddr2 sdram with a 7900 gs.

Graphics card prices are about to be shattered. I'm told the 7 series cards are not going to support a lot of the options in DX10 so the prices for those should drop drastically.

oh, and amd = teh suck. Goodluck. Core 2 duo = teh shiz
