  • Quick Computer Question...

You know the "Desktop" shortcut down in the task bar? Click it once and it minimizes all windows to show the desktop. I booted up the other day, and that file is now corrupted. It says "Missing Shortcut Show Desktop.scf" when I click it. How do I find that file? Its gone...

I copied your error message and tried a search in Google. Came right up with the answer. :)

I would take that out of your taskbar it isn't needed, and is using valuabe perfomance space on your virtual memory. Not by much, but I try to keep as much space in my VM as possible. I would remove it and just do it the ol' hot key fashion way.

If you want to minimize everything and return to your desktop just hold the Windows key found in between the alternate=alt key and control=ctrl key and press M. That will minimize everything.

Also, if you have multiple programs open and you want to go onto a certain one from the other. Hold the alt key and click tab until you see the box for the appropriate program you wish to pull up.

Hotkeys are the greatest invention ever. I know them all, and it makes a mouse practically pointless. I guess that's why my mice?(guess that what you would call it) last forever and ever without any use or wear.

Edit: But also, if you want to fix that problem the easy way, you can always do a system restore to the last date you knew it was working. If you are using Windows Xp, click start, all programs, accessories, system tools, then choose system restore. It's self explanitory from there. Choose restore your computer to an earlier date, a calendar will pop up, click on the date of the last time you knew it was working and then click restore(ok, continue) whatever it says and go from there.

Haha, smart thinking. Not sure why I didn't try that first, but thanks though. 15 sec fix, hmm.

But, the problem with the hotkey way, is you cannot restore the desktop to exactly how it was prior to hitting the button. Say I've got three windows open, I click desktop to view a file or something, then hit desktop again and wah lah, everythings right back without searching thru 34 tasks on the task bar :). Does it really hog that much memory though???
