I love to test drive cars for fun. It's also good to know all the tricks when you do buy a car. If they ever tell me "Let me go talk to my manager" my response is "look, if you can't make decisions, I want to deal your manager with directly". They sit back down every time. :)

I've been to some dealers where everyone is really upfront and nice and I've been to others where they are shady as hell and are clearly trying to rip you off. Sales isn't for everyone. Some people have it and do great and other people bounce around from job to job.

I was at the Ferrari dealer two weekends ago listening to one of the guys selling a testarossa and he pretty much handed the keys to the guy and said go have fun and give me a call whenever. Then another guy pulled up in a amg benz and the three of them started talking about how the benz guy just bought a shelby cobra the week before. Now that's a sales job.

Sales people..... I truely hate to make general statements.... but I have never met a sales person I liked.

Before working in the automotive industry... I thought they were lying scum who knew nothing of the product and just wanted to cheat people and they would sell anything! They were close on the scum level to attorney's

Now that I work in the automotive industry..... every day I confirm my feelings.

I would never be a car sales person. I don't trust them. In my opinion, they are lower than crap.

I would elaborate on this.... but I am at work

                  Re: car salesman?

service is definatly a profitable section. my dealership makes probably around 65-70% of the hourly labor rate.

I don't really know what the normal things is but yes, my salesman right now sell both new and used but we also just went through an ownership change and only had like 3 salesman on the first week

now they I believe are pretty much splitting it up because be have far more salesman and all the offices are almost finished being built

Who wouldn't remember me? I'm that guy that used to post as much as you and now posts a few times a year :D

I sold cars for a month at a semi-large new gmc/pontiac/buick dealership, and honestly selling cars itself wasn't half bad, but every thing else sucked. First, you're at work way too much for the amount of work to be done. You stand around and wait for customers. And if you work with d*cks like I did they literally sprint after customers (as most of you who have entered a car dealership have noticed). All this during the middle of a business day when most people are at work. The only times it's busy are evenings and Saturdays when you don't even want to work anyway. If you got a customer and they were cool, that was the fun part. Until you find out they owe 20 grand on a car worth 5 and they have no money or credit (this describes about 90% of the people I dealt with). And you REALLY don't want to be a sales manager. Because then your job is to yell at your salesman. Here's a typical conversation:

                    manager: You sell that truck?
me: No, it was a $40k truck and he came in in a vintage '89 festiva...red.
manager: You should have sold it to him anyway rable rable rable....
me: But he COULD NOT afford the truck
manager: rable rable truck rable rable finance rable rable
                    me: ?

                    you get the picture

At least that was my experience. Also you usually have to work holidays and if you want time off (ANY time off) you're SOL. There's a lot better ways to make a living my friend.

Well that depends, have you gone to college? If not, I highly recommend it. And no "I can't afford it" or "I'm too busy" BS, yeah, college sucks if you've got to do it working full time and have to go into debt, but it's sure as hell worth it. I coordinate learning services at a University and I love it. Sure, MAYBE (it's capitalized for a reason) I could make more money selling cars. But to me, a job I actually enjoy, a job where I have vacation days, a job where I'm not treated like a peon, a job that is respected and rewarding, a job where I know what my next pay check is without having to stress over it, is worth every bit of MAYBE making less money.

I'm sure you've been told this all your life, but pick a career you think you'll enjoy, get a degree and let life lead you from there. Even if you pick wrong, go back and get another degree (that's what I did, my bachelors has nothing to do with what I do). That's the way life goes. But working in a college I've seen way more people than I'd like to say come through here with notions of grandeur thinking they're going to strike it rich at something they hate. And sometimes they do. I know guys that walked off the stage at graduation into jobs paying 70-80k. But they work a ton, and hate their jobs. If you're unhappy 9+ hours (depending on your commute) per day, your free time is gonna suck too. I tried jobs just for the money, and you'll probably need to do that too since I wouldn't believe anyone either. But you won't find what you're looking for there.
