  • good deal?

Just bought a 3.8 out of a 99' fbird with 112k for $250 ..Its 100% complete computer and all ....just read a thread about starter prices being 180 bucks or so..so i think i kinda stole it...

Also it would be alot easier to have the heads/intakes ported and a cam installed while it sits on a stand in my garage....wondering if the headers should be put on after i drop the engine in or can i get away with having them on it before i drop it in?

Read that a cam, headers & head/intake port will put our 3.8's up to around 271 HP from abbott's...http://www.abbottracingheads.com/gm3800.htm.
    That sound about right?

Kinda curious to...would it be better to put 1699 into reworking a stock set a heads or just buy a alunimun after market set?

Seems to be my day for deals,i got a 00' set of camaro rims/tires of ebay for $135 earlier....
Here's a pic of what im wanting to fix up..

    Re: good deal?

    I love the front porch.

Anyways, put the headers on after you drop in the motor, it may not fit very well if you put them on prior to dropping it in. And yes, you did get a pretty good deal. I think you would be better of reworking the stock set for P&P and possibly get some aftermarket heads and cam.

Are you planning on keeping the car NA? And with a good dynotune after those things you listed, then you will be looking at about 250rwhp, maybe 270 with the right parts and a good job done.

Thanks for the porch compliment Vanquish...im pretty proud of it, i did 100% of the work even hand made rafter's with CDX gusset's ....hard to see ,but it wrap's around the side and 32' down the back side...just over 800 S.F. of roofed deck complete with vented vinyl sofit and seamless gutter's..

About the car i edited my wording on the after market head sentence...are you saying i'd be better off buying a set of aftermarket head's? and if i remember right, places used to offer matched head/cam sets those still around? and the sets would offer rough estimate's of HP gains to expect

          Re: good deal?

I wouldnt compare Abbott's results to your own. But ya, you'd be in the ballpark.
If I was going to rebuild the engine = yes, I'd buy a motor with +112k miles.
Our engines dont get the ridge wear like other engines cause the piston travels the full length of the cylinder. It would be nice to just have a spare.
          Correct me if I'm wrong

            Re: good deal?

With the price of wear and tear replacement part's , i think it's awsome to have a spare slo6 ..And about the comparason they claimed those gain's from a stock motor with 89,000 or so miles...i copy thier layout and i shouldnt to be far off
my fbird has 160k on it.... lmao
maybe i should just rebuild this 112k and use my current motor as the spare..

heads, cam, ported intake, headers 2.5 exhaust, pulley and a turbo will be the end of the mods..
with whatever smaller things i can learn from the site here also..
will the above list force a rebuild to "hold up" to those mods?
