                  Re: Everyone in the Military

Well I didn't really want to talk on here because I didn't want my blatant ignorance to come out in public but O'well.

Well I am looking at the Army or Marines. I want to be an officer and try to make this a career. But, supposedly, to be an officer in the Marines, you have to have a Bachelor degree and I will only have an Associates. I am not really sure what I want to do in the military but I want to do something more than just being a grunt. No offense to anyone who is out there every single day, I just want something personally more rewarding. Although, I guess, I would really have no choice in what I do. I always had thoughts about being a sniper or something more of a special operations type thing but if I can't make those things, I will just be a boot. I do know one thing, I am not interested in being an automotive technician in the military. there are reasons I do not want to work on cars for a living as a civilian.

I guess I'm really just wanting from you guys is some big brother guidance, knowledge and experiences. One thing though, I have a spastic Colon so I am concerned about my ability to be an effective soldier.

                    Re: Everyone in the Military

please post your ignorance, cause there are others who are just as ignorant and are seeking answers to the same questions! Dont be skeerd.
Maybe the military medical can take care of your health situation without any charge?

I hear they are taking people in as E-3 if you graduated (because so many have died in the god forsaken sandbox). True? Maybe you should ask your recruiter? (They gave my friend that incentive and hes been in trouble with the law (misdemeanors).

                      Re: Everyone in the Military

this condition can not be fixed. it can be delt with and hopfully outgrown.

I want to get as much info as i can before i go talk to a recruiter. I feel like recruiters are like car salesman so I want as much info as possible before i go buy that car

I do not know what E-3 is? explain please

                      EDIT: E-3 is private-first class?

                        Re: Everyone in the Military

As far as I know, all the branches require a bachelor's degree to be a commissioned officer. I am pretty sure you can be a warrant officer in the Army with an associates degree. I could be wrong about that, if I am someone please correct me.

If you are an officer, you wont be a mechanic turning wrenches, you'll be the boss of the troops who are turning the wrenches.

You do, in fact, have some kind of choice of what job you want in all the branches, especially if there is a need for people in the carreer field you are interested. You'll fill out a "dream sheet" listing some of jobs you would like. So you do have some say in what you want :)

My advice is to talk to a recruiter for ROTC or OTC (officer training candidate, the AF calls it OTS officer training school), they can answer all of your questions. Is there a college or university near you? If so, see if they have an ROTC program and set up an appointment to ask some questions. If you are interested in OTC, then the ROTC guys can put you in contact with someone who recruits for OTC and they can help ya out.

                        Simple breakdown of officer training:

ROTC = Reserve Officer Training Corps. 2-4 year programs available, you train while you are in college, take regular college classes and do Army officer training at the same time.

OTC = Officer Training Candidate, you already have a bachelor's degree and you will go to a 3-4 month school to learn to be an officer.

                          Re: Everyone in the Military

I just replied back to your email. If you want something fairly rewarding and your going into the army then choose something in the 63 mos. 63 is where most of the mechanics positions are. I was going to be 63s, which if I remember correctly was/is light wheel mechanic a.k.a under 10 tons. I think to be an officer in any branch you need a bachleors. The rank you go in as depends on a lot of things, such as do you meet some job requirements already, foreign language skills, high asfab test scores, etc. The recruiter will give you all those details but don't let them B.S. you, just tell them to cut the **** and give it to you straight.

OK, supposedly, the military pays for up to 20K in existing student loans, is that federal loans or all student loans? probably a recruiter question huh?
