another idea i have had is to possibly be in the Military Police. I have always considered being a police officer as a civilian.

If I'm gonna go in, I want some kind of special training (maybe fun):
like MP, weapons specialist, pilot, hand2hand melee specialist, Computer expert, etc...

If you go in on the "buddy system" how well does that actually end up working out? I sense a negative disturbance in the force...
How much running are you all required to do once your in a job and out of Basic/Boot?
While in Basic/Boot how much running did you do? Streneous activity?
I'm sure I would love obstacle courses and being a leader (most physical).
But I used to be in cross country and I feel like my knees are giving out on me. sigh

Well they won't let you park out in front of the barracks so don't think about that. The only transportation you have in basic and AIT is your feet. You'll have to leave your car where it's currently at or somewhere you trust it.

Forgot what it stands for now. Basically it's your job training whatever you decide to do. Length of time varies depending on branch and job. Infantry is 8-11 weeks medical is up to 2 years. I think mechanic is 11 weeks. MP is probably 4-6 months i would guess. Those are the people you don't want to mess with in the military.

You will do LOTS of running at basic training, especially in the Army and Marine Corps. If you are not in great shape right now, you will be once you are done. I think its 10 weeks for the Army and 13 for the USMC (thats for enlisted training, officer training is set up quite different for ROTC and OTS/OTC).
But either way there is physical training (PT) at least twice a day, sometimes more no matter what branch of the service and no matter if its officer or enlisted boot camp.
Those are the people you don't want to mess with in the military.
Correction, those are the ones you want to make friends with :D
BTW, FYI....AIT = Advanced Infintry Training. The AF calls it Tech School, Marines/Navy call it something different, but its just specific training on how to do your selected job.
Yeah red phase in the army you can count on about 4-5 times of physical fitness. Like shodown said, if your not in great shape now you will be. I wasn't terribly out of shape but when I got out of basic I dropped 20 lbs and was ripped. You'll learn to like cadence on long marches and you will learn to enjoy humping the ground, at least that's what it will look like after the drill sargents are done with you. Not to scare anyone off it's a lot of fun and I wish my knees were in better shape because I would love to be in now.

I will never consider the army/navy/coast guard/military... It would be cool to be an Army Ranger/seal or something hardass hardcore like that, but its not me. I've had too many years of being pampered and spoiled. (Been away from sports because of injuries) :(
I'd rather be pushing buttons from America, sending bombs to drop out of satellites. lol You know what I mean, I'd rather be in the AF.

For officer training, Air Force, Army, Navy ROTC the boot camp is 4-6 weeks. If you want to be a Marine officer, you'll go thru Navy ROTC then split off after graduating college. Thats for ROTC.
For OTS/OTC, you are at boot camp for 3-4 months (depends on what branch) after graduating collge. That 3-4 months is boot camp and learning about the service of which you are training for.
OTS/OTC can be tougher for some people than ROTC cuz its a straight 3-4 month long training session.
OK, but what about when you are out of Basic and in your job? Are you still Required to do alot of running?
Right after basic you will go to AIT/Tech School/etc, where you will learn how to do you job. They usually range from 4-8 months. This training is similar to basic, but not near as intense. You will some physical activity but not as much.
In officer training after boot camp (commonly known as Field Training), you will have 1-2 years of college left. Camp is usually the summer before your Junior year, sometimes before your senior year. After you graduate you will go to a school to learn how to do your job which could be anything between 4 months and 2 years long, but its much different than AIT or Tech School for the enlisted corps. You will be basically paid to go to some specialtly training school and live like normal. Whereas in AIT or Tech school for the enlisted corps you are required to live in dorms and such.
How does the whole officer thing work? Do you sign a contract like everyone else and then after that time frame....what?
Yup, upon completion of ROTC or OTC/OTS you have a 4 year obligation to the military. Once your 4 years are up, then you can sign up for another 4 or depending on your job, you could get a signing bonus (up to $25,000 sometimes :D) and sign on for another 10-15 years. For example, AF pilots were given a $50,000 bonus to sign up for another 10 year commitment, but that was a few years ago.
