IMHO 3.42 is a perfect balance.
3.23 FTL!! I would only get 3.23 if I did mostly ALL highway driving and alot of it!
Or if I was racing the autobahn
Sure 3.23 might lower your rpms = which is less gas

but with 3.42s, it raises your rpms = closer to your power band (so you are making more power) which almost negates the "lower rpms = less gas/better MPG" arguement I just made! Do you understand?

I can give you a good example. A few years ago My wife wanted a Ford Sport Trac. I'm not a Ford man but she wanted a small truck and the towing capacity was best in the Sport Trac. So we look and drive the first on and I didn't like it. It seemed weak. I told my wife no. She said that this one had 3.73 gears but there was one at a differant lot with 4.10. We checked it out and ended up purchasing it. She then got on some Sport Trac group and found that she got better GPM that one with the 3.73 gearing.

Luckly she changed her mind and this past summer I got her a real truck Z71

        Good story!
well dude, If you are comparing different truck brands... that is kinda apples to oranges. Cause FORD might have a higher gearing in their TRANNY than Chevy (or vice versa). AND different models/years of trannys will probably have different gearing. So alllllll the gearing has to be taken into account: the rear end gears as well as the tranny gears.

But I like how you helped prove my point that a numerically (#) higher gear will put the engine closer to where it makes GOOOOD POWER!! So therefore, it doesnt totally loose out on MPGs!!

Thanks, but the different gearing were both Sport Trac's with everything the same except the gears.

I just mentaioned the Z-71 so everyone would know that after suffering 2 years with a small FORD truck, we now have a real truck.

I have an auto and am Back to the stock 3.42s (again!)
I really like the 3.42s for all around DDing / highway.
                  I HAD 4.10s till they grenaded (I miss them :( )
If I had a choice again... 3.73s auto
