first thing I would do is check compression!
1) Low compression on the first stroke/crank and gradually increases means
bad piston rings. Also a wet compression can tell you this(it will build pressure).
2) Low compression on the first stroke which doesnt build up means bad valves or blown head gasket or cracked head.
Theres alot more that a simple compression test can tell you.
