I had an ENGLISH professor last year, who was Indian, but from Africa, and spoke portugese. Yea. That was a fun class.

Re: shouldn't an instructor speak english?

Interesting topic, I just had to add several of my own views here.

I get frustated at ATM's when I can't access my money in 2 seconds when it is spent deciding which language to choose first in order to cash out. I just want my money now. I think we have a few Canadians here, their ATM's offer transactions in French possibly lol.

I know a female who is multicultural in ethnicity and uses her bilingual use of languages to assist non-english speaking customers in a high profile bank. She gets paid higher than her white counterparts, more power to her.

Certain Amercians here would love to see English as the only official talk of the town but it's incredibly ironic that these same people chew authentic foods of different ethnic tastes such as Italian, Mexican or Chinese for example. I find this funny as hell.

I know the world is changing, faster than we can imagine. Change is good.

Re: shouldn't an instructor speak english?

Back to you BadInfluence. I would go to your academic advisor and raise up some sh*t until they transfer you into a class where you can understand the guy. If your advisor has any pull, he'll convince another prof to let you in. I agree, you paid for a good education, and if you can't understand the guy, you aren't getting it.

I dropped a Calc class for that exact reason. Three weeks in and I was doing terrible, failing my quizes. I had room to spare in my schedule so I just dumped the class and took it the next semester. I tell you one thing though, after that point, I made damn sure the professors last name was something like "Johnson" or "Smith" lol. I went from failing to A's in my class just on that alone.

And to everyone else, it'd be kind of cool if we developed a global language as we moved into the future wouldn't you agree?

Re: shouldn't an instructor speak english?

This is a difficult topic. If only native English speakers taught classes, we certainly would miss out. Many very smart/brilliant people come here to teach. It would be to our detriment not to have them. However, I can certainly understand the frustration of not understand the professor (been there, done that).

If you keep with the class, it is very likely youl will understand the accent over time. However, as already stated, it is your money and your perogative to speak with the Dean of that department or your advisor. If you are not learning, you are wasting everyone's time and your own money. The college works for you.

Side bar: It is amazing to me how few Americans speak proper English. Even profession speakers like journalists and news anchors mess up all of the time.

It would be nice, but will never happen. People in the US are too stubburn, as you can see by this thread, to change unless the rest of the world changes to what they already have. Same reason we don't use the metric system which is clearly better.

I definitely agree with you on that, but I think the point here is not that you should be a native English speaker to teach... just that your English should be good enough that more than 1 out of 10 people can understand you.

It is clearly better, but overhauling our current system with the metric system would be a daunting task. Thats like tyring to change our current vehicles right hand drive. All of the new cars coming out would be right hand drive, and all of the old cars would need to be converted. Doesn't make much sense to do.

If i go to an Indian restaurant then thats my choice. I don't mind putting up with half the menu being in hindi cuz i made that choice. I go into Dunkin Donuts in the morning to get coffee i do not get to choose whether i get the white girl or the Brazilian guy who doesn't speak a lick of english, and thats not fair, and thats when i'll complain. Choosing where you eat dinner and not being able to understand your college professor are two totally different things.

On that note: These guys are (as said) some of the most brilliant minds in the world. Well if thats the case why can't they learn english?
