Ok.. since I can.. I will. I posted just in the last hr on Autoblog.com about a video they linked. View it, read the comments.. and then your thoughts here.

I'm sure my comments there are taken out of context (par for the internet), but knowing our military group here, what's your take on it? Post here.. don't start a flame war on autoblog with them.. it's not worth it and I don't want to have to appologize for something that is a good topic.

    Re: Military driving video

now that is what I call driving!!! rubbing IS racing!!
I love the one movie where the US soldiers are telling the
Muslims to stop loitering... they end up shooting up the
Muslims car with pistols then they drive over it multiple times with
thier tank! Later, the Muslim tells them that he is a cab driver and
that was his only means of income!! LOL

Hmmm...in context as a military personal vehicle in a dangerous enviroment and the threat of being a sitting duck...I see nothing wrong with what I say.

          Re: Military driving video

I'm interested to hear from the soldiers who have served there. We don't know if that is normal practice for everyone. We don't know the context of the video at all.

Just blinding judging by how other cars react to seeing the humvee coming I would guess that this happens pretty frequently.

I too believe they are used to it. when some soldiers are pinned down and you have to get to them, anything goes. I am sure that most people abuse that kind of situation. They didn't sound like they were in a rush to help a fellow soldier, their demeanor just sounded like they were going for lunch.

correct. That's why I posted it here. I know many of you guys are MIL.. so I'm curious of that side.

Make no mistake, my comments are really being taken out of context now..

How many of you move for a F-350 moving up from behind you fast on the hwy?? How many move over for flashing lights coming from behind?? The comments I've posted there were about simple (I guess from living it here) common practices we live everyday here. I'm not saying the should ADD to being a target, they get that enough just by being there. But I think we get more across by "practice what you preach". You learn from your enviroment. AGAIN no one knows the situation of that video or why it was actually done.

yup that is normal driving at least when i was there in 05. cant be sitting in traffic waiting to be hit by an ied or a car bomb. i have been in a hmmwv when i was part of a convoy security mission. when you need to get around you do what you have to.

those hmmwv will also move a dump truck like it did that bus.

Ok.. since your the first MIL person to respond to this... Is it really unrealistic to have flashing headlights? A louder horn? Top mounted flashers? any combination or whatever.

I GET IT that sitting is just waiting to be hurt... But, I still think that doing by example is something that all people learn. So if they have to get use to seeing flasher to move, ok. If they hear an air horn to move, ok. If you see a BIG *** HUMVEE coming at you, move, ok. But my biggest point is that video does NOT deplict an emergency. Does NOT deplict what is happening around the vehicle. It's basically just showing us that US HUMVEE's can move a bus and small cars, jump curbs, etc... great. I already knew that.. My jeep does that.

Yeah, I don't see a problem with it. I know when we were doing an ammo run with live PATRIOT missiles we didn't stop for much. We had alot of help from the IDF and Police though.

                        Re: Military driving video

not unlrealistic to have those things at all. the only problem with having them is that is you have flashing lights for example on a mil vehicle you will be spotted. have you ever seen how the headlights and tali lights are taped as to only show a certin amount or in a design?? they are. cause at night you need to blend in as much as posable so you are not a target. that some of the reason you will not see a mil vehicle over there use flashing lights even in the day.

when that mil vehicle is way down the street it is hard to tell what it is. and with flashing headlights they will know we are comming. which is why when the vast majority of ied's go off it is a 2 man team that does it. one spotter who stands near the road and he signals the other guy when to etonate the bomb.

using the horn yes they do hear it and most choose not to acknowladge it at all so we have to bump them till they move. so even if we do use flashers and louder horn if they do not want to move they will not.

in all situations we have to move as fast as possable.

yup, what v6man says.... when on convoy/moving through a city, you don't stop for anything.

and yes, I have to agree w/a post on the autoblog: the only thing shocking in that vid is the wimpy horn.

                              Re: Military driving video

My brother has done two tours in Iraq and one in Afghanistan. He has told me plenty of stories about their convoy adventures. Ranging from children leveling weapons at them and having to decide wether to kill a kid that is the same age as his own. Also included are the stories of RPG's bouncing off the road in front of them, being stopped by rangers just short of them driving into an ambush. This is a urban war where the enemy is not clearly defined, to stop means putting an x on your back. There are plenty of videos showing the other side of what happens when they do stop. The majority, more than 50%, support our being over there and will continue to support what we are trying to do for them as a country. The same people that oppose us and the mission are the same ones that would do the same thing if they were in this country. People will always find a reason to complain if it's not PC. The fact of the matter is in war if you stop or stay idle for any period of time you are inviting disaster. Yeah you may piss a few people off but if it means saving your life or your buddy's life, the only family you have over there, by all means do it. Yeah they almost hit some people even a kid but the fact your forgetting are these are the same people that are blowing themselves up. If they stop for a person to cross the street they could be watching a landmine pass in front of them. I know a lot of people don't like the war or support it or america especially after watching a video like that or others but the thing that people forget is perspective. Put yourself in their position, and with the stories I've heard from my brother I have tried, it's hard not to say you wouldn't do the same things they have. Just ranting but I hope it made sense.
