Superman vs. Silver Surfer= both have superspeed and strength. Superman is stronger but the Surfer will snuff him out because he can absorb his power, which is the sun.
Thor vs. Silver Surfer = Thor's hammer will prove to be too much for the Surfer. Plus his warrior skills is an advantage. But if the Surface would sneek his powerful cosmic blast, Thor is a goner.

I've always thought that since the surfer has the power to transmute things to different states of matter he should be able to just turn Mjolnir into gas...

LOL..since you asked a nerd. Surfer can't do it. Mjolnir has mystical power granded by the All-Father, Odin. It's hailed as the most power weapon in the universe. Check out Thor #34 (I think) Gallactus feared his hammer and Thor was able to get him out of Asgard.
In the hands of Thor, who is already strong and skilled in fighting, makes him invisible. But ofcourse Odin limits Thor's power or else he is very dangerous and too much for midgard.
Thor actually has more power potential than his father since he has the potential of inheriting his Father's Odin power and his mother, Gaea, earthly power. That makes Thor potentially more powerful than any superhero or super villians around.

That's what you get for asking a nerd
Ah, see i figured there was more too it. To be honest i never really liked the thor story lines.. all that mystical what-not, and norse myth, was a bit of a bore.
