Most of the time I wear my seatbelt, but occasionally I might foget to put it on when I'm driving around in town.

Here's a little advice if you're not wearing a seatbelt:

1) NEVER reach up to put it on, especially if a cop is nearby. That's how they know you weren't wearing it in the first place.

2) If you get pulled over for speeding and you weren't wearing your seatbelt, and the cop notices, tell him you unbuckled it after you stopped. How is he supposed to prove you didn't? IF he decides to write you a ticket, it won't hold up in court. This actually happened to me one time: I WAS wearing my seatbelt and I got pulled over for speeding. When I stopped, I unclipped my seatbelt unconsciously, not thinking anything of it. The guy tried to pin me for it, saying I "reached up" which was BS anyway. "Click it or ticket" is a way to increase revenue, not to serve the public good.

I for one think it's a wise thing to wear a seatbelt, but I think it's wrong for the government to penalize me for not wearing it: it IS ABSOLUTELY NOT THE GOVERNMENT'S JOB TO PROTECT ME FROM MYSELF. The government's job is to protect people from each other. If I choose not to wear a seatbelt, that's my damn choice, it's not the government's to make for me. This is a philosophical objection to an unjust law, I'm making it on principle, not on content. Again, seatbelts are good, and everyone SHOULD wear one, but not because a law is passed. I'm done.

Here we go, with the holier than thou attitude I already see for some of you. Guess what, I don't always wear my seatbelt either. In the Monte Carlo I can, but for some reason, the way the seatbelt comes over my shoulder in the Firebird, I can't keep it on. It has a tendency to cut into my neck, and I have always been a firm believer of being comfortable in a car before wearing the damn seatbelt. I can't concentrate on on driving with a stitched piece of fabric cutting into my neck like a band saw. Do I condone not wearing a belt, no, there are alternatives. Id actually prefer having a 5-pt harnass over a stock over-the-shoulder belt, simply because of its comfort. Most likely going to be one of the first mods I do for the Firebird is a racing seat and a 5-pt Simpson harnass.

only reason why i wear mine is because ive been nailed twice for no seatbelt tickets. had i not, id probably not wear it, but i got tired of paying tickets.

The argument goes like this. You get people with no life/health insurance speeding around and crashing. The rest of the public has to pay the expense (either higher doctor bills, higher insurance premiums, higher health insurance costs). So by forcing everyone to wear it, the gov't is protecting people from each other.

You also have people that want to wear their seatbelts, but they are too stupid to remember. A ticket now and again helps them.

You also have people that don't buckle in their kids. They should be shot with prejudice.

I agree. I do not like the gov't telling me what to do, but stupid people ruin it for everyone else. Laws have to address the lowest common denominator, so the rest of us are not paying the price for their stupidy. This is why we should stop interfering with Darwin. :)

I understand where you are comming from with the being comfortable thing, but 5-pt harnesses weren't designed for the streets. If you are properly secured with one it can make it very hard for you to view your blind spots, they can be extremely dangerous in a roll over if your car isn't caged (don't know if you had already planned to install one), and can cause a lot of damage to your body if they aren't setup at the proper angles.

back when i had my permit, i was driving by a cop with extreme caution, and next thing i know there are flashing lights behind me.

The cop had pulled me over to give my mother a ticket for not wearing her seatbelt. I swear as much as she does that this is the only time she's ever forgot, but she still had to pay the $94 fine.

I agree to an extent that the government shouldn't make us wear the seatbelt. any amount of money ticketed for a first time offense of something as simple as a seatbelt to me is ridiculous, at least allow for a warning for the first time. As for me, i wear my seatbelt always, and even sitting in a stationary vehicle, it doesn't feel right unless my belt is on.

I agree the gov't shouldn't be telling anyone to wear a seatbelt. If you are over 18, should be your choice. Kids should wear them, or their parents should be killed if they don't protect their kids.

In my perfect world, which won't ever happen, but it's my dream. Insurance companies should be the one's to enforce the seatbelt wearing. If you are in a car accident and not wearing a seatbelt, insurance shouldn't cover any injuries to you in that accident. And your rates just went up also.

They shouldn't be waisting time in the courts, and the cops on the streets because someone doesn't want to wear a seatbelt. Go get the drug dealers and the child molesters.

Pay the ticket, or it will become an arrest warrant.

I don't mind the laws of having to wear a seat belt all that much, it saves lives... point proven.

This new law is the one that has me outraged, but not really because I don't do it with my child in the vehicle.

Has anyone heard about the new law that you cannot smoke a cigarette while there is a child present in the vehicle? They are pretty much taking our vehicle rights away one by one.

x2 on the insurance thing. I have to agree. Its pretty blatant that the goverment sees it as an easy cash cow that nobody can get mad at them for because its "in the intrest of the people", and one of the basics of driving.

See i can kinda sympathize with that as well. In fact i was reading this thread at work and i asked my boss whether she wears her seatbelt.. she said the exact same thing (well.. cept for the 5pt harness thing).

But i dunno... if i was buying a car... i wouldn't get one that i wasn't comfortable in to begin with.

its the same :bs: as the taxes on tobacco (cigarettes and otherwise) and on alcohol and on all the other stuff. The government gets too much into everyone's business. If i wanted to ride a motorbike, i'm allowed to, but i cant drive w/o a seatbelt wait... isnt the fatality rate for bike accidents FAR higher than those of car accidents?
i personally wear my belt almost always but the point remains... I'll look after myself. I pay health insurance, i wouldnt be a burden on society, if i want to be too lazy to reach over my shoulder, then goddammit thats my right. i'm sick of being told what i can and cant do and taxed out my arse by a bunch of bribe taking lazy bums in congress. for God sakes! 9 out of 10 of them cant follow the laws they pass! virtually ALL of them have criminal records!

I'm definitely the same way. It is just force of habit. In driver's ed in high school we were not allowed to put the car in gear without the seatbelt on, so it just became part of my driving routine.

Some sort of instructions (private or through your high school) is required in IL... rather than these states who let some moron kid and his crackhead mom forge a sheet that says he drove 50 hours with her on his permit and he gets his license and goes out the next day getting in a accident
