I don't know much about that myself. I had put Bosch +4 plugs in the Monte Carlo, and had seen a 2mpg increase in mileage in city, and about 3mpg on the highway when used with 89 octane gas. Probably not much difference, but I don't think any spark plug can be compared to another....similar to motor oil.

The actual FUNCTION of motor oil may not change from one brand to another, but for me it seems like Mobil 1 Extended Life runs much cooler in the Monte. Tried Valvoline a few times, but the engine would run a little hotter, and the oil was always dirty, even after a few hundred miles of putting it in. Stopped using the Valvoline in the Monte, and switched back to the Mobil 1 Extended Life, and the car runs a little cooler, quieter, and when I changed the oil 4 or 5 times after that, the oil would be dirty, then get much cleaner, telling me that it was actually keeping some of the internals clean. Like I said, I think the function of the oil isn't really any better or worse between brands, its the little things like cooler temps and a quieter running engine that you may see in the better brands compared to the crapier brands.

As for oil filters, Fram is a NO NO. There filters are badly made since they were bought out in the late '90s by some company I can't remember. I think the reason that the oil psi was low in some of the other filters compared to the Fram is because the Fram has the least amount filtering data than any other filter out there, which is something I don't like. I currently use Napa Gold filters in both the Monte Carlo and Firebird, they work REALLY well, and is probably some of the reason why my oil psi was low awhile back on the Firebird, because of that filter. But it never goes below 30 psi, and they are fairly inexpensive, and you can buy them in boxes of 12.

I like Royal Purple myself. But they are expensive and hard to find. I just use Mobil Synthetic with a half a quart of Lucas Additive. Work just as good for me.

I agree about the spark plugs. Rapidfires/NGK perform the same in my car as Champions or Autolites. Oils differ with me. Motorcraft 5w-20 runs great in my car. It runs smoother and my oil pressure is more consistant. Also got 27 mpg traveling 85-90 over 1400 miles. Just my $.02

dyno numbers dont mean much, take it to the track.

dyno numbers can be effected by alot of things. if youve ever had your car dynoed, youll notice that power varies a little bit each time.

definitely seafoam... that is good stuff. I mean not life changing but good thing to do like every 30k miles, right before you do a tuneup with new plugs.

sweet results on Royal purple's website...

I have heard peopel get power from it, but is it still worth the money? Whats it cost to do engine oil, tranny and diff fluid? like $80?

on our v6s we might see 6 hp, gain, if we got the same gains as the SS, just because of our smaller engine with less HP.

after a full fluid change, and 2nd oil change...

                    you spent like $120...

                    that could be...
                    used sway bars
                    Lid
                    cutout
                    subframes

all stuff I would rather have then 6 hp(if we get that) And be spending that much money on my car for oil changes.

I agree that Royal Purple is good stuff, but it is too much money for such a little bit of change that you probably won't even notice unless you stare hard.

What, you think it would show negative results?

Numbers can be manipulated anyway you want. For me I use Mobil 1 and have for a very long time. As 95% of my miles are on the interstate I change oil at about 6-7000 miles. It is always clean. My last car was a Bonneville with a 3.8. It had about 40,000 miles when I got it and about 270,000 when I got rid of it. The engine ran just as strong and the oil pressure was the same when I got rid of it as when it was new.

Re: Royal Purple Experience / Review

I used either RP, Amsoil, or Mobil 1. I picked up about 1.3 mpg by switching to synthetic oil in addition to my car running smoother. Also, all my cars running synthetic start easier in the 0-5 degree temps we sometimes get. I mainly switched for the extended oil intervals because I put 500 miles a week on my car. I got sick of changing my oil every month.

Is it worth it, thats your call. To me it is. Rp did an article in chevy High performance. The article was great because the dude from RP didn't mention any specific oil, just explained how oils work. Synthetic oil is made from crude just as reg oil is. The main difference between reg oil and sythetic is how they change the molecules of the oil. Reg oil has big and small molecules while sythetics change the structure making them more uniform. The article also stated the the additive package is mainly the most important part of the oil. How fast the oil breaks down or increases wear characteristics mainly depend on the additive packages. Valvolines reg racing oils have much more zinc etc so they are much better for wear in your car especially if your running a flat tappet cam shaft. I know people with flat tappet cams running diesel oil because they are more zinc in them. Most new cars today have roller cams, so that isn't as much of an issue. Uncle sam is now regulating the amount of zinc that can be put into street car oil mainly for reduced emissions. The zinc and other chemicals gets into you combustion and they attack the o2 sensors. So my advice is to buy a well known oil with a good additive package and test which oil works best for you whether its reg or sythetic.

Sure, you can do it, if you don't have any leaks after the switch then you should be fine...
