  • So. MD Newbie, I hope

Hope to buy 1st Camaro tonite, a '98 base, V6 5sp stik with 91k, so I may be jumping the gun joining.
But this one looks sweet, and my car must be the daily commuter. And I had an Olds Starfire 4sp stik with tthe Buick V6 with fond memories, so I am taking the plunge.
Stock with Borla Catback, SS chrome factory wheels, and Whisperbox/K&N.
Got a few hours still; anything besides the usual I should check?
Love V6 sportscars; also have drove an Alfa Romeo 164 long term:) .
Current old ride I may keep is a '93 Lincoln MkVIII InTech.
Thanks for any help; I remember puting a timing chain in the Starfire, but nothing else...

Re: So. MD Newbie, I hope

same thing i tell everyone who buys any new car: check around the engine for any signs of leakage and full fluids, take it for a test drive and maybe let the owner drive (you want him to beat on the engine... if its barely holding on it'll let you know right there.) Definately pay attention to the suspension. make sure bumps are damped out quickly, theres no excessive body roll or noise, and theres good responsiveness. Check to see if it wanders or pulls on the road. Check for even tire wear. Check for good movement in the trans shifter. Listen to the motor under the hood. listen for any hissing or knocking or unstablility in the idle. give it a few revs and listen that it doesnt hesitate and calms right down...
Ask the owner for reciepts and whatnot as far as mainainance and service goes.

Generally give the car a good once over, check to see if there are any cigarette burns or w/e... most important BE PICKY! that little thing that you notice but say is nothing will likely wind up pissing you off bad. I love my camaro but dont limit yourself to f-bodies. most important that the car is in good shape and well maintained. a car needs to go first, look good second...

F-body specific: make SURE the windows move up and down at a decent speed. If one is slower than the other, you can bet you're gonna need to replace that stupid motor. Check the driveshaft... if its aluminum, it was probably seriously raced and as such you should look elsewhere. there arent a whole lot of trouble spots on a 3.8L f-body so you should be cash money.

Good luck, we hope you get it and stick around here! welcome! :wavey:

Thanks for all the replies! Leaving for VA to see the $4k Silver '98 in a few minutes...

I live on the Western Shore of the Bay near St Leonard, C/Dude, thx.

Let the owner drive; great idea!

              Where in VA is it?

Hopefully I haven't missed you, but check the coolant too. Look to see if it has a lot of gunk built up from dexcool.

Thanks; it looked clear, for coolant anyway!
I return to Sterling today to pick her up. Found her on DC Craigslist...

Borla is a bit louder than I like.
SS wheels are rusty but redeemable; I get the stock star alloys and tires too.
K&N/WHisperbox looks clean and tight; just what is the story on these whisperboxes? They get cold air?
Mechanically, the car is just plain superb. Cosmetics are fair at worst with nice interior; too dirty with road salt to get a good look at dusk.
Everything works, but the driver window motor is past its half-life, as usual.
Monsoon sounds decent, shifter moves nice and clutch is recent, and the BFG Gforce KWDS tyres are great; I like the bigger size on the 17'' SS Camaro wheels (Chrome).
Im a happy boy, hubba-hubba-hubba... :dj:

got here in 2001 from San Diego, but I grew up in East TN, and So MD is as southern as that place, except for the Amish...

My kid is a DE/Punter for CHS, and they won in Waldorf last year but got rained out at Lackey.

I brought the Camaro home today and he got off on blippin the throttle. We live top of a Cliff on Calvert Beach.
