Every school system is rated and ranked, and many people use this information when determining which town to live in. How useful do you think this really is? What is more important, a better school system, a motivated student, or supportive parents.
For example, a bad student in a good school may excel due to good teachers. A good student in a bad school may fail due to bad teachers. So what is more important?
i voted a high ranked school.. cause i'm considered ''gifted'' cause my IQ is around 130... and i go to a **** school with only 2 good teachers.. i've took one all 4 years of highschool and the other you can only take for 2 years..
when i start college in the summer/fall i'm going to be completely unprepared for everything except math because of this.
i suppose a students motivation could be important.. i do have a good bit of motivation.. but maybe that comes with the ''gifted''-ness.. lol who knows.
I consider myself above average smart and I went to a ****ty, and i mean ****ty high school. Midway through Junior year I lost all motivation to even try in high school, the work was so easy it was a waste of my time. I could be in math class with kids who didn't understand adding and subtracting negative numbers. Now, in college, its a bit of a challenge. I actually like having to motivate myself to do well.

I choose other, because obviously the answer is affirmative action. It doesn't matter how good the high school, or how motivated the parents cuz the man's just gonna pick some inner city kid with broke-*** parents and send his *** off to Harvard.

the high school I went to the teacher's sucked. I wanted to learn the material but it seemed no one wanted to take the time to make it comprehendible. A high ranking school I think would have hepled a lot more. Motivation is def important but to have the teachers and authority that actually gives a **** is better. I work at a college now and the teachrs I see around here remind me so much of the ones I had in high school.
Let's flip a coin. Heads I get tail, Tails I get head.
I would expect there to be a correlation between a school with good teachers and it's ranking?
well kinda, but
I believe school rankings are too biased on Other factors like:
teacher-to-student ratio, appearance of the school, etc..
than how good the teachers really are
whatever

when you back up and look a school's ranking if done properly would be a reflection students, teachers and the overall learning environment (read comfortable, safe, encouraging).
I have considered teaching numerous times and if I did decide to give up the corporate life and go to teaching I would be highly selective of my future work environment. I would think most good teachers would do the same. There might be some that are good that want to work in a more "challenging" environment but I would think most would gravitate to a highly ranked school.

Most people, when buying a house gravitate towards the highly ranked schools as well.
Since I am house shopping, I am trying to figure this out. Houses in the high-ranked districts are a lot more expensive, and I want to know if it's worth the extra money.
While I do think it is up to the students motivation to get through school, I think parents are the most important factor. I had a friend who failed high school and never got a GED because he skipped school for a week strait to stay home and play HALO 2 on his Xbox, his parents never seemed to care and he suffered for it. As for me, had my parents had not have been so helpful and pushed me to do my best, I dont know how I would have ended up! So student motivation...yes, parents...a no brainer
