  • Crap I need help...Suggestions!

Well its been about 2 days since i last started the bird..

    Its a 2000 3.8
I went today to start it and it just turns over but never completes (basically wont finish the final stage of start up) It turns over but it just wont start.

I just did a EGR Block off (Ill still have the system in there) the other day... And it started up just fine (from cold start) and ran good.

    I just dont know.
What would be the main reasons it would just not start? A list or something would be nice...I have the Service Manual from GM for my car it just lacks a Troubleshooting Guide.

    All Help is GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!

Forgot to mention the Voltmeter reads good voltage. Could it still be the culprit??

I just had the exact problem on my ford escort...it turned out to be the timing belt. The engine would turn over but wouldn't fire...went through all the regular stuff: battery, fuel pump, fuel filter, plugs, wires etc etc etc...and turned out to be that my timing belt had snapped.

you are telling me that the starter will only turn the engine over HALF WAY and not ALL THE WAY???
          Here is what it does...

The motor WILL in fact turnover...its just not firing.

it goes (audio text) duh dah, duh dah, duh dah, duh dah, not slow either...its just wont fire off.

So maybe its a vacuum or something.

any security light thing on the dash?

I had an issue like that when I was doing the 3800 swap, it would crank, just not fire. passkey/vats issue probly.

this should prob be in gen tech but w/e...
whenever you have starting probs, think FAST...
              Fuel, Air, Spark, Timing...
Check to make sure you got fuel pressure, a lil tester should be available at (name your hometown parts place here)
Air... is the filter rediculously clogged?
Spark, take a plug out and see if it's jumping the gap... also clean off your battery, cables and main body grounds (found RIGHT next to the battery, coming off the ground cable... just wire brush it..)
and Timing... being as teh 3.8 has a timing CHAIN, i wouldn't worry about it unless you have an m5 and stalled it right b4 it stopped starting...

if VATS or Passkey is to blame you wont have fuel pressure as those systems control the fuel pump FYI. So dont immediatly blame the pump if you have no pressure.

3.8L don't have timing belts. Timing chains ftw. But yeah, make sure your batt is charged, your fuel pump comes online when you turn the key to on ( you'll hear it whine ), you have spark ( take a wire off of the plug and put a screw driver in the end of it. Set it down and have someone try to start'er up, if it doesn't move you have no spark ), this may sound stupid but make sure your air box/filter isn't blocked off or filled with anything.

Have you tried jump starting it?

If it starts from a jump then its either a) bad battery or b) bad diode in your alternator.

If it still doesnt start from a jump, it could be bad fuel pump, vacuum, clogged fuel filter, fouled spark plugs, bad ICM or the plug wires are on the wrong plugs.

                          Re: Crap I need help...Suggestions!

Ok well I went to check out spark and fuel stuff...I went to turn the car on accessory mode (before ignition) and listened for the fuel pump..

The noise was a little rumble noise...So im pretty sure now its a fuel problem.
