  • Finally Got A Spare Key

Well after 10yrs of owning my car, and a recent lost keys scare... I finally decided to get off my behind and have a spare key made. On my lunch break I go in to the dealership parts dept and tell the guy I need a new one, he tells me its gonna be $36....I say go ahead. He sticks the key into a machine to read the resistor chip, cuts the key, I pay for it, go on back to the house to try it out. Of course with my luck, it didnt work...wouldnt even turn the cyclinder. This time, I go back with the car. I go in tell the guy it doesnt work, he cuts me a 2nd one...it too doesnt work. To make a long story short.....8 keys later, and after much confusion as well as a few cuss words from the parts guy, I finally got a key that worked. I wasnt mad about the hassle of the key not working, I thought it was kinda humorous actually. I know the dealer probably doesnt pay but a few cents for the key blanks, but for some reason took I joy in knowing that they lost out on making $288 on the screwed up keys they had to throw away. I kinda feel like I scored a victory for the little guy....lol

Well with tax and everything the key was $36.33. But still it makes ya wonder why theres so much of a price difference from here to there. Oh, while Im thinking about it....I had him price a ram air hood for a 96-97 Firebird, he showed me the computer screen to prove he wasnt lying... $2100 bux!!!! I was like "oh hell no". Came home looked it up on gmpartsdirect.com----their price wasnt much better, $1666 bux. I guess I'll just buy one from a aftermarket company (one day).

I'll tell you guys this much. Where I work we duplicate keys occasionally, and luckily we do VATS keys. We sell them for $36.99, now (prepare for the shocker) our cost on the VATS keys is only .75 cents a blank. We aren't even associated with GM, our key supplier is the middle man between us and GM. They are probably buying these blanks for .10 cents from GM. Talk about getting screwed on a duplicate for the ignition key. GM's basically bending everyone over and royally screwing them up the you know where. Luckily I get an employee discount for stuff at cost.

                      True that.

I think if i had a spare made it'd probably cost me in the neighborhood of a 100 bucks... just a guess.
