BLLDOGG is right. Saving money when possible is a great choice. Maybe not the most fun, but the wisest in the longrun. Then if a few years later you really still wanna spend it, then spend it! It'll be even a larger sum if you've invested it.

6k may not be a lot, but if your 6k in the hole and in dire straights it can be a gigantic amount.

If I had 6k I [B]wanted[B] to spend, I'd spend it. But if it's just there and ur not in a hurry to throw it, you could put it into a CD (those are safe choices, slow, but safe).

I know it kinda sucks, but man, we're not even 20 yet. Look at the big picture. We have the whole rest of our lives to spend money on toys. It's never to early to start investing money.

In the end it's really all up to you and what you wanna do with it.

If he invests it, by the time he's 35 it will be a lot more than $6000.

I work for a bank, and with todays interest rates, that 6,000 isnt going to turn into much.

You need to put that into a mutual fund and keep adding thousands a year if you want to make some money on it by the time you retire.

Here's what I've started doing. Take the total, and subtract anything you may NEED to buy (food, gas, clothes, etc). Then take this amount and 1/2 it. One half goes to the bank, the other to w/e you want. Do this for every check you get, and it'll all add up in your account fast, and you still got to spend quite abit.

Im kinda on both sides of the coin on this one. I am someone that throuoghly enjoys life, and that any opportunity that comes at you, you grab it and dont let go. Planning can be used as a good idea, but I have lived life everyday like it was my last. I have NO intentions on ever retiring, so I party hard and play hard, I spend my money as fast as I get it, and I have fun and memories that are FAR more valuable than a rich person. But...

I have lived my life the way I wanted so far, and I have nothing to show for it that is tangible. I am not one for tangible materials, whether it was a car, house, investment portfolios, nothing, but being in debt the way I am I do wish I had some money now put away, simply so I dont have anything major that is going to put me down.

Really it all depends on you. If you want nice things, save some money so that you may have them in the future. If you want to grow old like me with memories that no amount of money could ever buy, blow it like its going out of style. I live for the experience, not for tomorrow. But it really is up to you.

Save the $6000 for investments towards 2009. Then you have a choice whether to drop the accumulated cash to fund your new 5th Gen Camaro or Firebird.

Money doesn't come with instructions that's for sure! :)
