    Re: Japanese cars and reliability...

yeah... my room mate has a jeep wrangler that's got 350,000 on it... i hope my camaro can last that long...neons can also take a beating...

i realize there's a case for each side... i was speaking generally... but it's hard to argue against how dependable and reliable those three brands are... i wouldn't trade my camaro for any of em though... ... i like my cars to be a little more hands on... lol...

my mom drives a 2002 CR-V though... and it's perfect for her cause she drive the heck out of it and knows nothing about cars... 250,000 miles and it just needs a front end alignment... she doesn't even know it either :twak: ...

Yea, well Volkswagen is actually german for smouldering pile of horse feces, so there ya go.

A friend of mine at school has a 94 Jeep GC with 230k on it. Runs good but uses some oil. Also he's had to drop his tranny for something I dont remember. My girlfriend has the same year Jeep GC with 211k on it. Everything on it is fine and she doesnt even know how to put oil in the damn thing.

                    Ehh japanese cars are overrated...

Cars will last if you just take care of them. I have seen american cars last forever, and I have seen japanese care be nothing but nightmares.

                        Re: Japanese cars and reliability...

yeah im not sure what's so unbelievable about that... there's a ton of truckers that put multiple million miles on their rigs... cars with a million are a lot more rare... i remember a K&N commercial a while back with a dude that had a chevy silverado that had a million miles and a K&N filter... and K&N made a big deal about it cause apparently K&N makes the difference...

In the latest consumer reports... they pretty much bash Volkswagen for reliability... and new chevy's (cobalt and aveo)... im not sure about VW but my girlfriends 06 cobalt was in the shop with only 700 miles on it for about 3 weeks... and it's been a lemon since then... i hate that car... lol

anyway... like i said before... i think it more boils down to how well you take care of your car... unless you just bought a notoriously crappy car (chevy vega comes to mind...) or you just got a lemon... as long as my camaro holds up... i dont really care how reliable other cars are that i dont have... won't have to worry about a different car till after college...

I don't think it is that American cars are crap for mechanical reliability, it's that they are subpar for living with day in/day out. Cheaper interiors that aren't solid for a long enough time. Not to mention I like small, lightweight vehicles and all US manufacturers haven't made a small-lightweight hatchback worth anything, ever. Where is the American answer to the CRX Si or Corolla GTS, 20 years later and nothing? GM can't even make a lightweight inexpensive sportscar that can compete with the Mazda MX-5...instead they make a "sportscar" that weighs as much as my Tacoma - LOL.

And if you want durable....Toyota Tacoma's are pretty much hard to go wrong with. One of the guys told me with his old Tacoma he only changed the oil 9 times in 200k miles.... daily driver with no issues. I'd never do that with my Tacoma, but I've heard lots of similar stories... of the amount of abuse they can take and still keep on going.

x2 on the Tacoma. Those things are without a doubt the most durable OBJECTS on the planet earth.

not only are they fwd, but seriously the v6's are about at their limit of how much power they can put out stock. theyre all high compression, high reving dohc motors. ya, they make awesome power, but thats about all youre going to get. they are terrible for modding, just ask the 350z people. those cars respond terrible to mods. for big power you'll have to spend a **** ton more money to get good power and even then its not very impressive IMO. its funny how many modded 350z's and altima's ive seen talk **** about how much power they put down and yet still have a hard time beating lightly modded 99-04 mustang gts, lt1s and stock ls1s. and the price tags on them are pretty hefty for a slow sports car.
