    Re: Bikes... wtf?

My exhaust is extremely loud and I've never been pulled over for it.

As for the bikes, I tend to agree with Fireball. If they're going to impose noise pollution laws on cars, they should apply the same standard to bikes. Some Harleys I've heard are 10x louder than my car, and much more obnoxious. I don't really agree with noise pollution laws, but the laws should be consistent if they're going to exist....

If there are noise pollution law in your area, and they are enforced, and you feel compelled "for safety reasons" to put a deafeningly loud exhaust on it, then you should just suck it up and take your chances, or not ride a bike. Or you can pay the ticket, but don't expect bikes to be treated differently just because they're smaller and more unsafe. Lack of safety is what you get when you ride a bike.

Ok now that we have those justified, i have a good one or maybe two...

-Why is it legal to ride w/o a helmet but illegal to drive w/o a seatbelt?
-And why are mopeds that top out at 45mph legal but i cant make my atv that goes 90+ legal?

well.. i am an experenced rider and i can tell you i gas the hell out of a couple of the bikes when i ride them... i have a restored 76 kawasaki 650 with alot done to it, and it just looks weird... it runs a low 13 and for a old bike like that, its pretty good.. and when i roll around town in it i rev at everyone and everything i see... and at stoplights if i rev to like 3K it is really loud... and is just annoying for other people i am sure... but fun for me..

kinda like when people have windows down and systems blaring.. pissing people off next to them... disableing them to be able to use their cell phones.. (yes i do that too in my car)

but revving a bike is alot more fun, and diffrent then reving a car, but if you live around harleys and they seem like they cannot ride... thats probually true... lol

I dont know about harleys, but motorcycles put out exceptionally good emissions.

              also, quit crying..

for us motorcycle riders, the laws have changed..
probably cuz people whine alot about bikes being loud and obnoxious.

bikes come with catylitic converters and other emission stuff now

cops around here dont care how loud a car/bike is for the most part. the only ones they seem to harass is the ricers.

current car- 95 Trans am- bolt ons, parked and collecting dust. why? because **** it

When cops ticket you for exhaust, it's usually under "Improper equipment," not "noise pollution." A small, but crucial difference that really negates your argument

                      Re: Bikes... wtf?

I'm _much_ more serious about bikes than I am about cars. Cars are fun, bikes are my passion. Some opinions.

Loud pipes as a safety factor makes no sense to me. They're pointed in the wrong direction. They make the most noise when you're least likely to get hit. I use a far more effective headlight modulator. And turn it off when I'm riding behind someone. If you have loud pipes and no headlight modulator, your argument about safety is bogus, because you're not doing a far more effective thing.

What loud pipes do is prejudice people against motorcycling. If someone's siting in their own living room and a loud bike goes by.... And so I ride 2000 miles to Monterrey and find I can't ride the scenic drive because people hate loud bikes. Loud pipes are bad for motorcycling. I wish the police would enforce the law more.

"Rubber" pants. When I'm going cross country I'm wearing a full riding suit, which cost several hundred dollars. In hot weather, too. My answer to the usual dumb question is "I'd rather sweat than bleed".

Helmets. 99% of the time, and the best quality. Another few hundred bucks. Once in a while I like to feel the wind in what's left of my hair. I ride very differently (both where and how) then. If you have loud pipes and mediocre safety gear, your argument about safety....

All bikes emit far more pollution than comparable age/condition cars. I know they get great gas mileage. Cars use elaborate systems to scrub their exhaust of contaminants. Even bikes with cats don't do that as well. The emission standards (so many grams/mile of NOx, CO, hydrocarbons) are far higher for bikes and that's what manufacturers design for.

The fast bike is a Honda VTR1000F, an imitation Ducati that's a low 11 second machine. There are others.

i dont know exactly why about the helmet but i always assumed it to be something like... on a bike doing 70mph+ if you get in a wreck, your chances of survival are a lot slimmer than in a car. so quite frankly, i'm sure states like illinois is just being gay, and trying to save somebody some money and hope you die... those b*******! i dont like this state, illinois sucks. you can do 65mph on a bike with no helmet, but 15mph in a car and you're getting a ticket for sure. pretty gay, right?

and with the mopeds compared to atv's... im sure it's with the places an atv can go versus a moped. you cant escape a cop on a moped to easily, but with an atv... yeah cops stand no chance for sure... honestly i dont know why, just an opinion... i do agree, it's all gay...

This is what i was thinking. See i'll notice a bike cuz of its wierd one headlight pretty easily, but because of the doppler effect, i'm not gonna hear it until its right next to me anyway.

                          for chiming in.

Ok, and for those of you who'd love to know why i've got this stick in my butt: Its cuz theres a guy with a trial bike (which is louder than satan) who rides up and down my street all the time (usually in the evening when i'm watching the tube). I live on a dead end road, so he goes up the hill... then 30 seconds later turns around and goes down... wash, repeat.

So, illinois sucks because they leave it up to you to decide to wear a helmet or not?

Im a rider, and if im going to putts around town, enjoying the day.. chances are im not going to be wearing a helmet, eye protection.. yes.
The second i decide im going somewhere, on the interstate or anything else with speed, ill get my helmet on.

Im from illinois too, i dont think it sucks

49 state models, and california models... only difference is about 10+ pounds of emissions crap cuz california is dirrrty

Quite frankly i'm suprised too. Which was why i was wondering if bikes were immune to emissions laws or something, cuz it seems that there are more bikes with obnoxiously loud exhaust than not. I'm not sure if the cops are pulling them over, but i do know some people who's cars have been ticketed.. soo..
