laptop?

my laptop just took a crap on me... its absurd. 1 week of school left, exams and all, and it shakes vigorously when i turn it on, and is louder than my car... and will just freeze up after a bit. its a 3 year old sony vaio.

i need a laptop i can take to classes and stuff, so i want it to be light and thin. built in wireless and all that jazz. looking for like 2gb of memory, just because im always doing so much stuff, multitasking like a mofo.

what do people on here use?
the two im looking at are the new vaios like the TX series, and the macbook pros. i HATE apple, but it looks like that fits my criteria pretty perfectly. what else is there though?

i would NEVER touch another HP or dell...

IBM/Lenovo makes the best laptops.

HP > Viao.

Viao is way towards the bottom in the spectrum. Macbook would be good, but what experience do you have with it? I just see it becoming a big pain, especially for the last week of classes and such.

I have an IBM Thinkpad. I like it, although it's a bit dated. I could use an upgrade here inthe next year or two.

Well, I would never touch another Vaio after the one I had. Toooooooo many problems to list.

Personally I LOVE my HP DV5030us. It's freakin sweet, just a bit heavy, but that's fine. Also, you can't touch HP's warranty coverage and their online tech support rocks.

HP > Viao.

Either way, I'd avoid Sony Viaos like the black plague. Either get over the hate for HP, or get yourself a IBM Thinkpad.

You get a superior laptop, and a superior os.

And if you need windows, you can dual boot.

Mac first, Then Id suggest a Toshiba

That is all that we sell out of the computer store I work at. Well, those and Acers, but the boss doesnt reccomend Acers for students, because they are more fragile, and cant be tossed around as much.

the FIRST thing i'd do would be to start saving EVERYTHING. anything that might be construed as important in the future should find its way onto a flash drive or an external harddrive asap. try taking off as much of the casing as possible w/o damaging anythign and run a fan on it... it might just be overheating and the fan might buy you a bit of time between freezes...

haha, hp>vaio. ive owned 3 HP laptops, its the worst quality ive ever seen. not to mention that now its compaq, and i knew of 5 (FIVE) people with compaq presarios who had the motherboards BREAK.

i dont like the fact that IBM is chinese now. otherwise i would like them.
im trying to stay toshiba, sony, or mac. ive worked with macs before, i dont like them but i recognize that theyre good computers.

Last I knew, IBM Laptops were still built here. Just the brand is Chinese.

I've own 4 Sony VIAO's and the company I was with ran Sonys...earlier series back in early 2000 were great and durable laptops. Built well and very reliable...the last 2 Sony's I had sucked gonads. They are loosely built and materials dragged. My last one, a GX series, which clocked in at $1700 crapped out on me...the HD crashed and took 30 minutes sometime to boot. I'm not one to abuse my computers and laptops at all...I took care of this thing and after only 3 years, it puked! Battery life sucked too...sounded like a jet with it's fans and was hot as hell!

I'm going Toshiba next time...HP/Compaq is too gimmicky. Dell are just too...bland and well. Whatever...I get angry thinking about the crap Sony's been putting out.

Almost all laptops have enternal audio controls.

Dell has really crappy power cords. They all seem to go out after a year or so.
