Re: What gas do you use?

i run 33/66 or 50/50 mix of 100/91 octane on my 99 SS

in california we only have 87, 89, 91 octane. after logging my car with hptuners, i found a nice amount of knock at WOT (you can even hear it). i had tuned my car (removed 3 degrees of timing) to run on the crap 91 octane for a while until i talked to a reputable tuner in the bay area about it. he also had to remove timing - GM tunes the LS1 to run on 93 octane that is available in other states and he had to remove 4-5 degrees of timing on all the cars he tuned to get rid of knock related to california's 91 octane.
since the idea of taking timing out was basically detuning the car from factory specs, i decided to go the other way and just take the extra fuel cost.
when i use my 91 octane tune with the 94-95 octane fuel, the car feels slower. on the other hand, my high octane tune has my timing advanced 5-7 degrees over my 91 octane tune and you can really feel it.

if this car was my daily driver, i would never do this.

no cuz ur smart...theres no need to put a higher octane in ur car unless ur tuned for it cuz of FI mods or a H/C combo...

another way is to shave the heads, or cylinder heads with a smaller combustion chamber size (similar results) will bump compression. so no, piston shape and length of stroke isnt the only way to raise compression. ever heard of people cc'ing their heads to figure out their compression ratio when using domed pistons? different combustion chamber sizes can create different compression ratios...

(see highlighted font^^) Ummmm.....yeah, like I said, piston head shape. You proved my point, kthanxbye.

Piston rings dont give higher compression.

oh i agree on the rings part, i was simply supplementing your well informed addition :)

Re: What gas do you use?

If they are the overlapping rings yes they do. The normal stock rings have a gap in them. This is why when you build and engine you must figure out what the gap of each ring is. Then match them up with the other rings of similar gaping for one cylinder. Then so on and so forth. The gap in the rings allows air to pass though, not a bad or a good thing. It just does. So by not having any gaping (ie overlapping rings) no air passes though.

So on the up stroke instead of air passing though the rings to the crankcase. It instead stays in the combustion chamber. So more air in the chamber then stock equals more compression. Not much yes but more.

ur not gunna raise compression, maybe just gain some back that uve lost over the years

you do not gain compression from properly positioning your piston rings. you are suppose to stager the place of the gap

Total Seal has the "Gapless" rings... which is what I'm sure you're refering to.
Supposedly you gain a little power. I dont know if I would put them in my car. I really havent heard good things about them. I would just go with normal Steel rings.

They say it helps seal compression pressures, nowhere does it say you Gain compression. Its all good
