I wouldn't lose much sleep over the fact toyota sold more units in the 1st quarter than gm. Even if they do for the whole year, it doesn't mean much. GM is focusing on building better cars and reducing cost vs selling for volume. The volume will come when people sense the cars overall quality is better. Also a lot of folks forget that japan is not open to US auto manufacturers so gm, ford, and chrysler can't sell cars there. Toyota sells tons of cars in japan so its not really a level playing field to begin with.
