  • Yay! My first fender bender!

Yeah its been a jolly couple of weeks for me but I'm not getting in to that crap... Anyways, last night at work (bout 7:30pm) some stupid old man forgot to put his pickup in park on the opposite side of our parking lot and it unfortuantly rolled about 60 feet (can you say, momentum?) straight smack dab in to the back of my '89 Firebird (in Park) and knocked her a solid foot forward in to a metal pole. I'm inside at work the whole time this happened, thankfully co-workers stopped him from leaving.

Now this used car salesman fool from Cali obviously doesnt know us Oregonians very well cause he almost got his @$$ taken apart today when he got pi$$y with me as I told him I was taking the car in to check for mechanical damage as well as 3 estimates for body damage. I've gone well outta my way to play this off smooth for both parties and I'm not trying to take anyone to the cleaners I just want him to fix what he damaged! Is that to much to ask for? He's trying to tell me that he's not responsible for this or that and he's %100 in the wrong and my insurance companies about ready to whip out the fangs on this tard and his Californiastan insurance company!

Good thing is,I know a dude at a local garage who's very familiar with F-bodies and he's gunna check out my baby with a fine tooth comb (again,I told him only assemble a list of damages (if any) caused by this rear end collision). Anyways here are some pics... First day back on the road after winter and this has to happen.... . Got some damage pics and some before pics of the car in general (love this car!).

      yay! a fellow oregonian!

Sorry to hear about the car, doesn't look too terrible, should be a painless fix as long as the insurance companies cooperate..

Thats the thing, his insurance company doesnt really wanna do much. The damage isnt that bad,and it could have been worse so I dont think it'll take to long. I'm just curious how they'll match the paint on an 18 year old car. She's in fantastic condition but still. I just wanted to tear in to him mainly because he acted as if it was nothing... I've put alot of money and love in to this car and she sparkles man, this car was one hell of a deal! And for him to shrug it off as some stupid kid with an old "wanna be" muscle car I wanted to hit him so bad but I knew slammin his wallet would hurt a little more.

He tried to tell me that its impossible for mechanical damage to happen in this case cause he's been in to cars for fifty some years blah blah blah, so I jumped right back in his grill,"Yeah!?! Well I've been in cars for 23 years old man,and you cant tell me a damn thing I dont already know about this machine! And I've put a **** load of money in to this car,who do you think you are to tell me what happened when someone had to come get you from across the street to let you know your truck just hit someones car" . That shut him up,people dont intimidate me! 10x my size or not you wont walk away un scratched! Who does this old man think he is?

He got heated when he realized I was gunna MAKE him own up to this, even to the point one of the ladies I work with got between us,shortly after he left quickly cause man I was pi$$ed! I've kept this car so clean and perfect... Just for someone to **** it all up! Owell,I dont have to pay for it I just have to wait for it to get fixed.

Have the repair people check to see if the "honeycomb" energy-absorbing plastic parts inside the bumper covers (front and back) are damaged. That is an easily overlooked area of damage.

Also, check very carefully at the middle (top) area of the rear wheel wells. The body is designed to fold there to absorb the energy of a crash (and protect the passenger compartment). You might find the body has the start of a slight crease.

The same used car guy who will complain about having to pay for "cosmetic" or "inconsequential" damages will tell you how those things lower the value of your car when you go to trade it in on a new car.

I do however appreciate all information and advice I can get because like I said this is my first technical accident (aside from the time I nailed a road side pole on the way home@5am in my thunderbird,I'll show ya pic's if ya want... Dont drink and drive kiddies... But I figured as much as I pay in taxes uncle sam can pick up the tab on that road sign, cause he's a damn theif).

Also,I took a slight road trip (40 miles total) and at speeds of 50 plus the car tends to shake a bit and it never did that before this accident because of the four new tires, shocks and struts installed by les swabs so what would that be???????? I dont know exactly but I would greatly appreciate if someone could point out why instead of smart@ss replies.... Please???

Tomorrow I'll get to spend my luch hour getting estimates driving around from place to place and what not. I just need the info as to what I need to check out for damage stuff. So rock on my fellow Fbody owners.

                        Thanks.

Of course they don't. They want to drag their feet for as long as possible before paying. You will have to keep after them.

years ago my brother's beratta was rear ended by some lady looking for her purse (no joke). The rear bumper was pushed way up so the gas tank was exposed. He didn't have another car and had an hour commute, so he had to keep driving it - not safe at all. The lady's insurance kept dragging their feet. The cops and insurance companies all agreed it was their fault, but they kept delaying payment. I finally got PISSED and called the insurance company. I told them point blank he had a gas tank for a bumper now, and if he got hit again and died I would sue them for negligance. I chewed out everyone in their office going up the chain of command. The very next day they sent out someone to my bros house to cut him a check! My brother said the guy asked nervously when he showed up - "is your brother here?". sometimes you gotta be an ahole.

So, my point is, keep after them bro.

Be happy, my little bro just wrecked my 86 iroc today, and he doesn't have insurance on it (so my insurance is gonna go up god knows how much) and he doesn't have a job, so he can't even pay for the damages to my car. He was worried that I was gonna kick the **** out of him, but this month has already been going off to a ****ty start. I figured i'd be the one to wreck my car this month or something. Guess I got lucky :(

Re: Yay! My first fender bender!

Well, good news... The gentleman who bumped my ride and myself have come to an agreement (for an undisclosed amount but I assure you both parties are satisfied). As I have assumed from this point on (considering this is the first time I've delt with insurance companies outside of paying my bill) considering the estimates I got (which were insane to say the least) were at the same or more than the value of my '89 Fbody and they wanted to total it out and slam this guy with the deductable. In which case we both lose (IMO) so we settled outside of the insurance companies (And considering how tiny the dent/crumple is I can live with it,and in turn put that much more in to the important parts of the car (ie. engine/trans/etc. which are top awesome as is)).

I have to say, this really says ALOT about insurance companies..... We pay these sorry excuses for humans how much money???? Yet when we need their help they are no where to be found until we track them down and force them to help us. What the hell is wrong with this country?

Anyways,I just wanted to finish up with this thead. Thanks to everyone who posted, looks like I get to keep my sweet @$$ fbody+mod$ and he can forget it ever happened.

Considering the damage is quite minor,I realize my attitude might have been off but all is well. And,even more good news! I'm moving! My sister bough another house and is giving me this one so now I have a practically free pad WITH A GARAGE!!!! Woot!!! I can tinker on my own rides without lectures from the landlord!Woohoo! Maybe karma doesnt cosider me that big an A hole I guess.... Who knows... Anyways, thanks to all and take care everyone ;) .
