Very easy. Just jack up the car and it shouldn't take more than 30 minutes with handtools provided you don't run into any probs. Won't give you more power but it will lessen the parasitic loss in the drivetrain. Frees up about 10 pounds so you can figure that would help a little bit.

There is a lot more stuff you can do..just go to the main page and click on modifications. A whole list of stuff, given if you have the money and time, then go for it.

If your going to upgrade from drums to discs on the rear, then why don't you just change out the whole rear end with a rear end from a T/A or Z28. Not only will you get the disc brakes, but you will also get a limited slip rear end and maybe better gearing. Kinda a 3 in one deal.

i like it. how much does a rear end swap usually cost? Can't u usually swap from a junked car?

That would be the best place to look. check out the technical database here and get the RPO codes so you know what to look for when you got to the junkyard.

Re: A story of a Firebird

Ok, here's everyone's favorite answer. Ya gotta search the posts.

There is a ton of information in here that you can read about, ranging from what are the best cars to get a rear end from, to how to deal with the 3 channel to 4 channel ABS change, to details about how to actually do it, and much, much more.

Chances are that the boneyard that you get the aluminun driveshaft from also has the car it came out of, which in turn has that rear end.

Start searching and reading. You'll be a pro before you know it.

btw, i dont see lsd listed. lsd, gears and driveshaft would be the next step imo. didnt see whether it was a a4 or m5 but if its an a4, a nice shift kit and maybe a stall converter.

if you are lucky, they can be found pretty cheap (~200). around me in NY, they were a bit more (~450). The swap should be straight forward if you get a matching rear. I'll let you know how hard it is soon, because I have my new rear (disc brakes, lsd, brand new 3.73's) ready to bolt into the car.

Re: A story of a Firebird

if you wanna go fast, then start saving for heads, cam, valvetrain, FI/nitrous, fuel, msd, computer tuning (highly recommended... you will know everything going on in your engine)

if you wanna look good, there are sites that sell leather kits for your seats and steering wheel. paint interior pieces, tint the windows, throw together a sound system... lower the thing fer sure. T/A spoiler, WS6 hood...

if you want handling, shocks, lowering springs, sway bar(s), strut braces, subframe connectors

you have a MULTITUDE of options. just pick which category you wanna fall into and go for it. dont be like me and dabble in each... you wind up wholly unsatisfied.
