Monday will be a sad/happy day...my Camaro will be officially sold then as the buyer is flying in for work related training and will be driving it back home later that week. It's going to a good home (somebody who will use the car for what it was designed to do - roadcourse events/autocrossing) but I will miss it all the same. Even so, I really am excited at the same time. Looking right now to get a more useful replacement, might even be able to get one the same day the camaro leaves. It all comes down to availabilty of manual transmission and being at a low enough price.

Farewell my Camaro, you've been a good car - stubborn when worked on sometimes, but faithful, reliable, and one I could put 100% faith in on track...



I'd like to thank all the board members in advance for all the help with and insight of the V6 4th generation Camaro - really have been a help when needed.

The replacement will be a whole different direction in purpose... reason I'm selling (will have sold it on Monday) is because I really can't afford it and need an economical and totally reliable daily driver. This Camaro has been extremely reliable but economical, affordable (gas, tires, brakes), and daily driver it is not.

So it's going to be replaced with an economy car. I'm doing this on purpose so I go easy on the mods (having said that I've already decided on using Koni dampers for it, swapping the Recaro drivers seat from my Tacoma into it, loosing 100+lbs of un-needed weight to get it around 1700lbs, and installing a Tachometer - because it doesn't come with one.) I also like not drawing attention, a sports/performance car draws attention to itself; a stock looking economy car doesn't. But even though it's an economy car I'm still going to track it/autocross it.

It's not a civic and not a Honda - it's more reliable/durable than a Honda (should at least get the manufacturer now... ;) ) I wouldn't mind an 88-91 EF civic but fuel mileage is not quite as good, it's heavier, and they are broken into/stolen way too much compared to what I'm wanting to get. If I got a civic I would be too tempted to go crazy on suspension mods when I really just need a daily driver that gets good gas mileage and is dependable.

One last hint, rear end is similar to a camaro - solid axle with panhard rod.

Getting 30/40mpg is a lot better than 22/27mpg (in my Tacoma) and the ~20mpg around town of the Camaro. Gas, tires, and brakes are expensive consumables for the camaro - (275/40-17 DOT-R tires run $700+ a set, Hawk HP+ brake pads are $200 a set, brake rotors some $130, and it sucks gas when driven hard on track/autocrossing). In comparison I could get a good set of good high performance 205/50-15 street tires for under $300, Hawk HP+ pads for ~$80, Brake rotors for $25, rear drum shoes $15, and a 1.5L engine won't suck gas like the 3.8L on track/autocrossing. Gas is just one factor in the economy of a car. $1030 verses $420 is a big difference in operating cost.

The SS replica spoiler is going with the car. I got it brand new off ebay (~$250-$300) and had it painted locally if you want to go that route. Only thing I don't like about it is the rear visibility - takes up the lower 1/3 of the rear view mirror (which wouldn't be too bad if the 4-point Autopower roll bar didn't take up the upper top 1/3...)

What I'm after is a '95-'98 Toyota Tercel Coupe...the Corollas are too heavy. When I get better employment then I can step the Tercel up a notch and transplant a more powerful 1.6L drivetrain (the 20 valve 4A-GE) that'll give it 165hp/120ftlb, sweet little motor. Only thing that's not so great is you have to run premium with its high compression ratio (11.0:1).

Tires replaced every year and brakes replaced about every year as well...That's a $600 dollar difference every year. My Camaro is not a daily driver (~1000 miles driven in a years time, half of that track/autocross miles) and I need a daily driver...

Update: Didn't get a Tercel... Test drove one ('97) and bleh! After doing a little more contemplating I ended up going with a '90 Honda Civic Sedan DX for the following reasons:

1. Sleeper looks (won't grab attention) and better chassis stiffness than the hatchbacks.

2. Handling Potential (The EF/ED is a cornering machine when setup...)

3. Engine swapability is the best there is of any car made

4. Aftermarket parts prices and availability

5. Had brand new Raxles CV shaft and suspension system bought for my sisters CRX which was totaled before I had a chance to install the parts. She let me have the parts for $200...

6. Near perfect body with excellent interior for $1500... just motor issues and keeps blowing the right rear turn signal.

Once I get done with the car it will weigh under 2000lbs with 4-point rollbar installed, have 150hp, corner at around 1.2-1.5G's and handle with instant steering response, accelerate quicker than my brother's 90 Integra RS (which could take my lightened Camaro from a standing start to 330ft) and still get great fuel mileage.

The improvements have begun...
