Re: gas prices are out of freakin' control

This bill actually passed the US House of Rep. most Republicans
voted against it....(gee what a surprise) Bush says he will VETO
    it...
WASHINGTON - The House, eager to do something about record high gasoline prices in advance of the Memorial Day weekend, voted narrowly Wednesday to approve stiff penalties for those found guilty of gasoline price gouging.

The bill directs the Federal Trade Commission and Justice Department to go after oil companies, traders or retail operators if they take “unfair advantage” or charge “unconscionably excessive” prices for gasoline and other fuels.

The White House called the measure a form of price controls that could result in fuel shortages. It said President Bush would be urged to veto the legislation should it pass Congress.Bush
said my friends in the Oil industry tell me gasoline now is much cheaper than when Clinton was president.

Most gas stations don't even make their profit from the gas

It's quite true. When gas prices rise as high as they are now, it's rather hard for the gas stations to make any profit at all. Because, they can't raise the price much higher or people just won't come to their station, and then when they realize that they drop it just dead even with everyone else and come out almost even in their expenses vs. intake.

Once more Hybrid cars sell, and New York and San Francisco finish their role of making all cab drivers have hybrid's, we will see a huge difference in gasoline prices. The less gas people need, the less it will cost.

I'm not sure how much gas prices are around the north and west, or east for that matter. But I'm loving the south more and more everyday. It's over $3 here in most places, but luckily, the place I get gas from is still staying strong at $2.97 a gallon. But, I've been driving my F150 Triton v8 around, so I'm still looking at spending a nice $50+ a week easily in gas.

Screw hybrids...let's all get motorcycles. They already get like 50 MPG

I mean, I was under the impression that if something is a "neccessary good," people would need the same amount all the time.

Anyways, do you not have Public Transit in your area? Cab service? a bike shop? I know of a bunch of people who don't even have their driver's licenses, but still get to and from work and have normal day-to-day routines.
it is necessary in the way that you need it to get to work, to make a living... especially if you live by me and work downtown in the city, biking is not a plausible alternative.

and i dont know if you have checked recently... cabs, buses, trains... what do they all have in common? they all run on petroleum products. even if you take public transportation, you're still affected by the high prices of oil. bus tokens, train tickets, and cab fares all go up with the rise of the cost of oil.

maybe if you would stop being a sarcastic ***, then people could start having intellegent conversations with you...

You just don't get it, do you?

50 MPG > 29 MPG (that little symbol in between them means "is greater than" in case you were wondering)

What that means is that motorcycle A will travel 50 miles on one gallon of gas, while car B will use 1.7 gallons of gas going the exact same distance. It doesn't get much more basic than that. You're getting much more out of every gallon of gas.

Call a cab. Move closer to your job. Find a job that fits your needs as far as travel.

that you don't directly pay for.

First, you need to get your terminology correct: the cost of oil is not the same thing as the cost of gas. Stop using them interchangeably
Second, more of those fairs/tabs you pay goes towards the other operating costs of the transit system; maintenance, paying their employees, overhead, etc etc. The cut of the pie that goes towards gas alone is insignificant compared to the other costs of running a transit company
Third, aside from saving money on gas, think of all the cash you'll save by not having insurance/car payments, and having to pay taxes on your toys?

I'm sorry, i couldn't make out the rest of your post over your cries. Wanna run that by me again, but this time, without bawling like a baby?

The bottom line is, if you truly have a honest-to-God problem with gas prices, you'd stop buying it. Plain and simple. But, most of yall whining continue to buy it, so despite your frantic posts and rants, your actions demonstrate that you not only condone, but support high gas prices.
So, all of you that are crying and moaning about gas prices, but still filling up, congratulations: you're feeding the very monster you fear so much.

I am not a lawyer or economist, but I can see many ways this could go wrong. Besides price gouging, why not let the market decide? If people pay for it, then why can't companies make a profit. As Smoke already said, if prices were TRULY too high for people, they wouldn't buy it.

I agree 100% with Bush on this one. Regulation has failed several times, and I do not see the benefit here.

so let me get this straight...you'd rather have fill up a million gallon tank after a million miles, rather than a 1 gallon tank after 50 miles? If that's how you handle your money, I forsee you living in a van down by the river in the near future

It kills me that these companies make record profits every quarter.

I really don't think you understand. Who cares how many miles you can get on the tank. Its how much the tank cost in ratio to the miles you get on the tank that matters. Bikes have about a 4 gallon tank, thats just a little over 12 bucks to fill up. And with that 12 bucks you can ride your bike for a little over 200 miles. Now with that same 12 bucks in you car you fill up only 1/4 of your tank and travel only about half the distance.
