So here's an odd story for you. I was sitting down to dinner tonight when I hear what sounds like partridge cawing outside. I go out on the back pool deck and its a tiny little frog perched up on the deck railing making all that noise. I couldn't believe such a little thing could make such a loud noise. Anyway I catch the little guy in a bucket and release him into the woods behind my house.

Not two seconds later I'm walking back to the house when I hear all kinds of squealing noises coming from the garage. I look inside and I can see something squirming. I flick the light switch and open the big door to let some light in and I see what appears to be a squirrel. It has fallen from the rafters (I can tell because there's a hole in the gyproc and there's fiberglass insulation all over the floor). The poor little guy had his neck wedged in between two peices of wood and couldn't get out. So I get one peice of wood loose and he kind flops free. I look up and see a racoon staring at me.

Anyway...long story short its a 1 week old baby racoon who fell from the ceiling and survived. We called the local animal control who brought a cage. We're now hoping the mom racoon will come down for the can of sardines in the cage and then we'll go up into the rafters to look for the rest of the babies. We were told there could be up to 5 or 6. We're going to release them back into the woods just like the frog and plug up the chimney hole in the garage (we never use the stove anyway). Although I'm hoping its more successful with the racoons as the frog made its way back to the fence within a couple hours.

At my house we get deer and wild turkey in our backyard all the time. One time a turkey ended up coming right up to our back window just staring into the house.

update: we left out the cage with sardines in it last night. The mom racoon didn't take the bait though. She got down from the rafters and brought her baby back up at some point over night, but completely ignored the trap and bait. Also she relocated her babies towards the back of the garage, where we have almost no way of accessing without cutting a hole in the celing...smart little thing. Anyway...it was nearly 90 degrees in Montreal today. It must be nearly 115 up in the rafters. I got a look at her with the help of a flashlight and she appeared to be panting. I really hope she and her babies can withstand the heat. We set up a fan and left some drinking water. Hopefully she'll take the bait tonight as we relocated the trap up in the rafters.

I'm quite impressed with her for being more concerned with her baby than the food.

PS...the loud frog came back today too. I manipulated it with a squirt gun and got it to jump into a box. I then released it in the other end of the wooded area behind my house. I'll be thoroughly impressed if it finds its way back again.

115° and a can of sardines? Good luck with this one man.

                      Thats crazy...

I remember about 3 years ago my girlfriedn and I were at her house and heard something outside. It ended up being a peacock. It roosted on the chimney all night. The neighboor told us about a week later that he found it in his barn. He called the animal control and it was a pet and had flew out of the trailer of some guys truck while he was on the interstate behind her house.
