mpg are NEARLY the same...was insurance purposes the only reason?
Anyone who bought a new camaro back then obviously did not do any research bc factory rated mpg are only 2-3 mpg difference for over a 100 hp difference...

About 150 difference and yeah. V8's weren't getting 28mpg on the highway until recently. And even so it didn't catch on with the public, the fbody was doomed after 1999 or so. But up until the end most of the fbodies bought were V6's. Not everyone really cares about going 0-100 in 12ish seconds.

It was insurance related for me. I called my insurance guy and when I told him I was considering a V8, he laughed at me. He then told me the Firebird was more expensive on insurance than the Camaro...and then couldn't tell me why. (shrug)

honestly... and i'd hate to break this to you guys, but we have to come to terms that the v-6 fbody is marketed at middle aged women, who want something sporty and cool, but dont want somethign "dangerous" or "overpowered" (or their husbands didnt want competition)...
Believe it or not, I've talked with a bunch of women that i've worked with when we're benchmarking vehicles and i've heard on a number of occasions that "this is just too powerful for me". It is what it is I guess.
That and theres a MAJOR price difference too. IIRC the base v-6 went for 18 something while the base z28 went for 25 somethign...

I don't think they specifically marketed it towards middle aged women such as they did with the Mustang. But it is funny because I did buy my bird at the time, from a middle aged woman, haha.
But price is the major thing here. I doubt insurance, gas mileage or wanting less horsepower was a huge contributing factor.

The image of F-bodies are teen sportcar. That's not the case anymore. Those teen from the late 60's and 70's have grown up.
I see alot of older adults, including myself, driving an F-body.
The downfall to V8 fbody is not because of the price. I mean if you think about it, some V6 cars out there with a lot less HP cost as much as a V8, or even more and they sell well.
The majority of the people look for practicality and reliability. V8 fbody lacks that. A V6 is more reliable and easy to live with than a V8. Check Consumer Report and you'll see that it's -12 on reliability. If you look at the 3800 cars it is considered average.
Practical people want passing power, a good looking car, and a car that's not heavy on the wallet. That's why a V6 fbody sells well.
Excellent comments, Thor. You nailed it. I bought my car because it's a good looking car, has the power I want without paying V8 insurance, in 122k it has NEVER left me stranded, and it looked good when I checked it on Carpoint before I bought it on the new car lot.
Of course, the fact it was loaded with everything except leather seats (which I didn't want because the ones I had in my Supra fell apart!) and t-tops had something to do with it, too. :)

Reliability of 3800 > GOD! I needed a car that's reliable, good on insurance, looks good and have just enough passing power. V8 insurance > V6 insurance , that's what sold me since I am (and most f-body owners are) 18-24 years old.
