  • question on Burning DVD's.

okay i dont have a dvd burner, but all i want is to make a data dvd. since they have a 4.7 gig capacity it would save me a lot of disk space.

would i be able to burn data onto the dvd r without having an actual "dvd burner" ?

Nope. Spend $20 and get a dvd burner and plug it into your computer.

If I may hijack this, this kinda applies, but not.

I was talking with a guy at work, I was going to burn a video disk for playing in our lobby. He was getting a blank disk and he asked if it was a DVD-R or +R. I just looked at him and told him to stop making things up, but is there really any difference?

DVD-R is more campatible with other players. But most players today will play both DVD-R or DVD+R

            I second 99P.

Five years ago, the -R +R debate was an issue. I co-own a video production company, so I deal in this everyday. I can say from experience, it has been a few years since I have run into any compatibility issues (thank gawd).

Now Dual Layer DVD+-R, that's another story. We still have a bit to go on that front. We have RCA and Sony players in the studio and they don't seem to have issue with dual layer burnables. Most of the problems we are seeing come from clients with those cheap DVD / VHS combo decks.

We are about to get our HDCAM suite set up. Can't wait for that! I'm curious to see what authoring HD-DVD and/or Blu-Ray is going to be like (besides expensive).

seriously..hard drives have come WAY down in price...more secure IMO and much faster....I'd look into a couple hundred gb HD before you spend money on a DVD burner...the only thing my dvd burner is ever used for is copying, um...home movies ;)

thing writes fast, and has a huge capacity, that i dont think I'm ever going to fill. No complaints

                  Re: question on Burning DVD's.

Heh, I could fill 250GB in a day. I only have a little 80gig on my PC, and that is filled with stuff continuously getting deleted/burned to make more room.

But I'd say get a DL capable DVD burner, since the price of DL disks are slowly going down. I have an NEC burner and love it. Can make backups of 360 games perfectly.

I only have a stinkin' 1.4TB of space here.

Also, DL NEC drives. That's what we use. Excellent drives!

                        i got a laptop too.
i just have the hd (remeber, external) sitting next to my laptop on my desk, plug it in when i need too.

unless you are traveling at lot, and dont want to lug around a bigger hd, its not really a problem.

even then, they have smaller 80 gig hd's.
