        Re: New Firebird

with any 14 year old car you're gonna have problems...
it's easy to come up with quick fixes off the top of our heads b/c (no offense) we're asked questions like this on an almost weekly basis. you'll find plenty of threads on this board w/ people (including me) who've had their cars for YEARS and mileages well over 100k (and in some cases over 200k) miles and they keep running strong.
the fbody's are the exemplification of my whole opinion of GM: best powertrains in the business, close to the worst platforms. that means, the critical stuff, like the powertrain is gonna keep chuggin along for a good long time as long as you do very basic maintainance. the devil is in the details: ignition coils and wires seem to like to die, fuel pumps arent the best, power windows are nothing short of god-awful, but with those (reletively) minor exceptions, frequent oil changes and general upkeep and she'll be good to you (plus people will give you compliments if you keep her shiny).
carfax it, drive it, have a gearhead friend check it out, and if it's legit, BUY IT. 2k is a steal for a good car.

          Re: New Firebird

Yea I do have an interest in DIY. And I understand it is an old car, but I do not need it for anything else than driving me around my college town this coming fall. I am just looking for something that will get me around without hopefully much issues. The low miles are a good sign, but it has been sitting in this persons garage for quite sometime and who knows what kind of problems it might have after a new battery is put in.

I go up there to test drive it and take a look underneath tomorrow. Not much a car expert, but I think I know all the different things I should be looking for.

If anybody has any more advice please let me know.

          Thanks,

          Brendan

check the oil to see if its milky white... that's a coolant leak.
