  • New Firebird

One of my friend's friends is trying to get me to buy his 1993 Firebird for $2k.

About 67,000 miles on it, body is in great condition, a couple things wrong with the interior. Mostly easy fixes.

He just put a new battery in it and got brand new tires. Anything to watch out for with this year of the firebird? Any important recalls that I might have to watch out for, or is this a good deal?

    Any input would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Brendan

You are just confused because firebirds are usually full of chicks. It's a common misconception

Off the top of my head...power windows die (easy fix), headlight motors strip (can be replaced with metal gears), pinion seals leaking, rear main seals leaking, burnt spark plug wires, and coolant having gunk in it from dexcool sucking.

Most stuff is pretty easily fixed and you can find the answers here.

I'm sorry I am not very knowledgeable with automobiles, I just don't want to have to repair a bunch of things right away, and from what you said, thats 5 or 6 quite easy fixes that you know of off the top of your head.

Would you suggest I replace the gears and some of the other things right away? Or could I wait some time.

            Re: New Firebird

I'm just throwing some common problems out there. You may or may not have them. If the windows move up and down smoothly then don't worry about that. If the headlights flip up and down with no weird sounds then don't worry about them. Check the rear end and the motor for fluid leaks if they are leaking a lot then have it checked out. If they aren't dripping or only a little bit then you are probably fine. If the car runs smooth with no miss fires then you know your wires aren't burnt through. If the coolant doesn't have any gunk in it then you know that is ok too.

I was just listing some things you should be on the look out for now and some things you may run into in the future. If the car runs well and you are happy with the price pick it up. Of course with any used car it is always a good idea to do a tune up to get on top of any issues that may be comming your way.

dude is trying to get advice about buying a car. no need to drag the comoro vs Firebird debate in here.

Brendan, any car 14 years old may have problems. the miles are low, which is good, but it is an old car. Do you have any interest in learning how to DIY?

Sounds like a good deal to me! As long as it is in decent condition.

sounds almost too good to be true. last time i saw an fbod that cheap....green 93 firebird. dents on fenders and hood. nasty scratces everywhere. new tires, shcks. dash board had a hole in it... 1 windshield whiper. turnsignal tingy didnt work. engine sounded like it was going to die during dle. incmplete tint remove. tranny "rebuilt"(supsoedly done 3 weeks before). no maitanace record for anything. =2200. just get someone to check out the car also. knows something about cars, and preferably not someone that knows your friend's friend.

depends on your location largely, its not a newer car by any stretch, so that sounds about right to me, it is a pretty good deal with those miles though

Yeah, I'm gonna vote for "to good to be true". Way under mileage. If was 167K miles I would believe it. Also, make sure it's not one of the cars from Katrina. Seems cheap enough. So if you need a car, I'd go for it. Just offer him $1200 and let him talk you up to $1500.
