So how do I know what laptop RAM to get...

Not hip with the computer lingo like I used to be.


I have 256mb, looking to upgrade. How do I know what ram to get? I know I need notebook ram, but is there anything else I need to look at? I am looking at a gig, but if I have 2 slots, Maybe I'll just add 512, and keep the 256.

I am going to shutdown my laptop and just pop the cover and see if the current ram lists it.

wow... adding a gig of Ram will really wake a computer up.

256mb --> 1.25 gig

What kind of laptop do you have? Don't run a 256 stick and a 1gb stick. Buy 2 sticks of 512 if you want 1gig. Typically, they run in dual channel and you are better off having them the same speed.

Or just buy the 1gig stick that you found (if it fits) and get rid of the 256.

why would I be better running the 1 gig without the 256mb as well?

1.25 inefficiently is still probably better then 1gig efficiently.


and buying 2 512s, adds like $30-40 in price.

I wouldn't worry about dual channel RAM on a notebook. You're better off with more RAM than being able to use a dual channel bus. Memory access will rarely be your bottleneck on a typical notebook.

Damn hard dirves are the worst bottlenecks! Just the sound of them pisses me off. I've got 512MB on my laptop and really need to get 1GB soon.
